On Kansas's three-point shooting performance...
We had some key defensive mix ups at some key times.
On the second half free throw shooting differential...
I'm not sure. You play a game where they shoot 24 foul shots in the second half. I don't think we did anything differently, I'll look at the tape, but they did a good job of attacking and they got the calls.
On the defensive mixups ...
That is what happened. As I try to sit here and be positive, you hope that some of the mistakes that the young guys make, they won't make later in the year.
On wearing "I Can't Breathe" t-shirts during pre-game warmups...
We've been, as a group, talking about this for a while. I thought they wanted to do it the other day, but I thought it was important before they jump out there that we talk as a group and understand what's going on, what does it mean and why do you want to wear the shirt?"
I think you can go from Patrick Ewing wearing a t-shirt underneath his jersey and it becomes something that everyone does. Allen Iverson braiding his hair and playing in the league and it becomes something that everyone does, or Kobe wearing the tights and then everyone does it; this isn't that. This isn't one of those things that you go along with because it is trending. We have had a lot of discussions and the emotions, as it relates to the protest that the guys wanted to do today and the emotions and the feelings in the locker room are all over the place, meaning not necessarily everyone feels the same way. The emotions go from fear to frustration to confusion to anger and the reasons why every individual wanted to wear it are all over the place, too, which is probably pretty consistent with the emotions across the country. Everyone does not respond the same way, but I think the group wanted to put ourselves in a position to be part of a process to help where there is positive change opposed to just negative reactions.
When we were in the Bahamas we sat in a room together and watch the Ferguson decision and had our first conversations starting that night. It's something they wanted to do and after talking with them and understanding and making sure they understood the importance of what it means as opposed to let's just do this, I agreed.
On who had the initial idea to wear the shirts...
Since the Bahamas we've had multiple conversations. Various people came up to me separately and then we had a group discussion. It wasn't like one or two or three people were pushing it along. I think it was something that was sitting in the back of their heads and was just pushed to the forefront. They decided as a collective group and felt they had a responsibility.
On the Georgetown's performance...
At this juncture it's hard to assess that right now. You just keep replaying different possessions on both ends of the court where if you do this or don't do that, use better communication...I don't know.
Senior Forward Joshua Smith
On the pregame "I Can't Breathe" shirts ...
Just to piggy back what coach was saying. We didn't wear the shirts to say that the cops were wrong or the system was wrong. It was just to show our condolences to the family because, no matter how you look at it, we don't know who was right or wrong but they still lost somebody and they won't get that person back. That was just the main reason why we wanted to wear the shirts. Just to say that we are aware of what is going on. We're not choosing sides, we're not saying one side is wrong, one side is right. We're just saying we are looking out for the family because they are the most important people right now in the whole thing because, with all the protests going on, they lost somebody.
On playing the two-man game ...
We have a lot of guys who can be aggressive at different times. With this game, and how they were playing me, I had to be more aggressive. I'm not really that selfish with the two-man game, with [D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera] knocking down shots and L.J. (Peak) knocking down shots. When they shoot the ball, I just try to get in a good offensive rebound position but, more times than not, I am confident they are going to make the shot.
On playing in front of a large student crowd ...
No matter if there is 50,000 people or 10 people, we are going to come to play. It felt good to have the fans there but, no matter who shows up, we are going to play.
Junior Guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera
On the pregame "I Can't Breathe" shirts ...
It was a variety of reasons why we wanted to wear the shirts. It was quite a few families who lost a loved one this year with the Michael Brown case and Trayvon Martin also. We really wanted to represent those families that all lost someone. It wasn't just this one scenario that a lot of people walked for that one case. I just thought that we wanted to represent the families and send our condolences that way.
On what Kansas was doing defensively to stop him ...
I think it was more just missing shots that I normally make. Rushing some shots that I should have taken my time with. It wasn't necessarily anything defensively. I do want to give them credit. They crowded the paint a lot more and were playing a lot of help side defense which was really good. I'll commend them for that. It was just a lot of shots that didn't go in.
Kansas Head Coach Bill Self
On Georgetown coming out in "I can't breathe" shirts ...
I didn't know about it until after the game. I don't come out onto the court for warmups so when I came out I didn't know and I was just informed, but it's a pretty strong stance and I think it's pretty good. Certainly it shows a lot of solidarity amongst their unit, I don't see anything negative about it at all.
On his thoughts about the team's first true road game ...
We didn't play, they're (Georgetown) hard to play great against sometimes because it's usually not a rhythmic game. We played through foul problems and some guys are nicked up and everything and I didn't think we played well at all but we competed hard and won some important possessions. Up five or seven we somehow let them come back and tie it, but when we had to have a good possession we got a good possession. I'm happy with our kids because I thought they tried hard and of course Brannen Greene was big off of the bench for us.
On the success from the weak side and drift and skip ...
Our whole deal is drive to pass. If you drive to pass that's going to be something that was there, but they play you're talking about when Greene made his last three was a big play off of that. We're not a good passing team at all, we don't make the game easier for our teammates, but on some of those passes to Brennan I thought we did pretty well.
On the turnovers during the game and forcing opponent turnovers as well ...
I can't speak for John Thompson III, but they had 16 turnovers and we didn't pressure them and we had 17 and they didn't pressure us. It's one thing to turn the ball over when they pressure you, but neither team really pressured each other. Basically we played between them and the basket and they did the same to us so obviously ball handling is a concern.
On the play of guard Kelly Oubre, Jr...
I thought Kelly played well. He had seven points, five rebounds and he made his free throws, I thought he played well and he's labored a lot and he's a much better player than what he's had the opportunity to show through minutes and he's a much player than he's shown when he's had the opportunity and tonight I think was his best game without question.
On how guard Kelly Oubre, Jr., can contribute down the road ...
I think he we're going to start playing him some at the four, it could make him a bad matchup and the biggest thing is he got his hand on loss balls, he keeps balls alive, he's one of those guys that can get in the paint off the bounce and pick up and loose ball and score off of that. He's not a guy that you're going to play into shooting threes every play like Brannen Greene, but he could be a lockdown defender eventually. He's got such great length and a lot of things that he does well he just hasn't tightened them up yet, but tonight was a good step for him.
On the emphasis on free throws ...
We have tried to spend more time on the line of late. If we had made 33 more free throws against Kentucky we could have won that game too. The whole thing is we have to do a better job of getting to the line and making them. We've actually done them pretty well the last few games.
On defending Josh Smith ...
We didn't do a good job on him but he's a load, even our guys said `God we knew he was big but we had no idea'. It's hard to simulate how big he is until you actually guard him. Last year we tried trapping him and he hurt us with his passing so we just said let's try to keep him three feet from the basket and then if he bounces it then the nearest big guy goes and takes it. But the second half we were better. Our defenders did a decent job on his considering how big he is.
On what he learned about his team tonight ...
I think we're learning how to compete. We're not that good yet. I think we have potential to be good because we're so young we have to try to figure it out. But we don't know where our shots are coming from consistently, we don't know who to play through at times, sometimes Frank Mason III is the best player on our team, sometimes Wayne Selden, Jr. is and sometimes Perry Ellis is. We haven't quite figured it out yet but that's okay, the key to having great seasons is winning games where you don't play great and what I do think is positive is we've competed and won the most important possessions and our first shot defense has been good. Even though statistically it may not be as good as some people in our league, we've played a pretty good schedule so far. I think we're learning how to win ugly, which is still winning and you can get confidence through that.
On what he saw in guard Brannen Greene tonight ...
According to him if I let him play he could do it almost every night, but he seems like he's been focused of late. I think playing against Florida and seeing his teammates out there playing and he's not getting many minutes is a humbling thing and something that he's taken in a positive way and he's talented. But he's gotten in his own way with us on the court by not doing what we think he's capable of doing and tonight he was totally different he was locked in. He made shots, but even if he hadn't made shots, he still would have played pretty well.
On how Andrew Wiggins has adjusted to life in the NBA ...
I think he feels good about where he's at, I thin k he likes Minneapolis, he's enjoying his teammates and enjoying head coach Flip Saunders based on what he's told me. The one thing about him is he's a ridiculously bright guy and even bright guys don't understand how different it is when you go from college to the NBA. I think that he understands that there's a difference and a different approach and that kind of stuff. I think he's had four of five games with over 20 points and that kind of stuff. He's growing into it and I think he's doing well.
On the minutes that forward Svi Mykhailiuk played during the game ...
We didn't see much from him he didn't play very well. He wasn't aggressive he didn't play very well and when we put him back in he threw the ball right back at another teammate but I guess that's what happens when you're playing 17 year old kids who should be high school juniors. To me he's as good an NBA prospect as we have, to me if you're going to grade him out at age 21 he's grade out pretty high but I didn't thin k that tonight was his night so that's why we didn't play him.
On his impression of Georgetown heading into conference play ...
I think they're good, we got lucky tonight because D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera didn't make shots, but I think they have some nice pieces. I bet you that they're going to end up having a good year and they're well coached and well drilled and I'm sure Georgetown will be right in the middle of it during BIG EAST play.
Sophomore Guard Brennan Greene
On how you stay in the game when you sit extended minutes after a foul ...
Watch closely and see what they're running. They like going to the post and the back screen to the elbow, that's how I got my fourth foul, and that's what they kept going to for the most part but that's how I stay in the game.
On fighting the urge to continue shooting from the outside ...
I know I would be taken out of the game if I did that so I just stay within the rhythm of the team. I felt well during shoot-around earlier today, I like the gym and I like the arena and I just played within the team.
On how open he was off the baseline dribble...
I wasn't expecting that. We actually didn't scout much of their defense, we just knew their concepts on defense but I didn't expect that.
Freshman guard Kelly Oubre, Jr.
On playing big minutes down the stretch ...
I love my team and we showed some signs down the stretch that we were going to be great. My minutes were important and I knew that I needed to rely on these guys and these guys needed to rely on me if we were going to get this big win. It was a big boy game and we stepped up.
On his role on the team ...
Just doing anything that coach asks me to do. He can throw me anywhere and I'll do it, just be disciplined and stopping guys on defense and working with the team.
