Georgetown 78, Towson 46 Washington, D.C. - Verizon Center December 7, 2014

Georgetown University Head Coach John Thompson III

On Georgetown's defensive effort...

From the beginning we were attentive. I thought we did a very good job of helping each other, which our defense has to continue to progress...I thought that they did a very good job of stunting and showing and supporting that attentiveness. We focused on that a lot this week and I thought they did a good job right from the beginning and sustained it. That's a pretty good team. They are better than the final score indicates. They put five guys on the floor that can score, so I thought our guys did a good job of working together as a unit.

On the importance of establishing post presence early...

It's always important, beginning middle and end. Josh is a weapon we have that we have to take advantage of. I thought he did a good job today of pursuing the ball and not just watching and waiting for it. Once we established (Josh in the post) it becomes a lot easier to make 11-of-22 from three.

On the team's strong shooting performance...

I think we're a better shooting team that what we have shown, so as our guys start to settle in the ball is going to go in. I think one day we will get to a point where you're going to have to pick your poison. That's a process, that's an evolution and we're evolving.

On the team sharing the ball on offense...

I think that is how our team is. Definitely D'Vauntes and hopefully Josh are going to score for us, but we have so many guys. If the guys play like they did today it takes the tension out of it, because you just pass to the open guy and the open guy can score. So if you get five guys out there that can share the game, that can score, that can help each other. We have a team where we can put five guys on the floor and the opposition has to worry about each of them. It's not Kansas specific, but with reps and experience we're going to move more and more in that direction where you just hit the open man and he's going to produce.

On his energy during the game ...

Just to go off of what D'Vauntes was saying earlier, everybody that we talked to earlier coming back from the Bahamas made it seem like we played well simply because we were in the two games that we lost, but we knew that we were going to have to come down and play defense. We knew that coming back from that there was a lot of stuff we can control and starting now we need to be more attentive on defense and rebounding and control the things we can control and let the game go from there.

On his early start allowing the team to get looks from the perimeter ...

I feel like when we control the boards, these guys like to get out in transition and with our offense everybody is a weapon. Whether it's me in the post or D'Vauntes getting a drift or L.J. Peak driving, you can kind of see in our scoring, we had five guys in double figures, whoever has it can keep going. But as long as we get rebounds and control the boards I think we should be fine.

On avoiding a slow start...

I think more so we just wanted to come out and be aggressive. Coming off of two losses we wanted to be the aggressor and come out and get a win more than anything. We saw that in the last two games that we lost rebounding was a big factor in those games so that was what we wanted to capitalize on today.

On maintaining the level of intensity when leading by a large margin ...

No. We just look at coach and go off of that.

Towson Head Coach Pat Skerry

Opening Statement...

"Obviously not the result we had hoped for. Credit to Georgetown, they were ready. You know, statistically the difference in the game was the 3 point shot. We felt coming in that they hadn't shot the 3 point shot very well, that we really needed to be packed in and make them make 3s, which they did. And obviously we didn't make any, so that's where it gets away from you. But you know, they were ready, they're obviously a terrific team. It's just disappointing, I thought we played better. I thought really where they hurt us and exposed us, they're a good defensive club, and they exposed some lack of execution. That falls on me to get that better. It's disappointing we were excited and our guys were pumped up to be part of this. I thought we played better. But we didn't, and that's a credit to Georgetown.

How did play in the paint influence ability to make Three's...

They do a good job of getting in there. They're clearly big, and were not small. I don't know, they had guys that hadn't made 3s that today knocked them down but not that they're not capable. We felt like we had to pack it in, if they spread you out they're too good around the bucket. If we were to give up something it was gonna be the 3 point shot. So it's a little bit different than what we'd normally do, but it's what we felt we had to do against them. They shot it, they shared it they shot it.

On difficulty scoring in the first half...

"Well I think they're really good defensively, one, statistically, we were really concerned about turning the ball over. 12 point difference, I think that did hurt us. They're long, they challenge shots. I think what happens with somewhat of a newer team like us, you're playing a better level of opponent than you've played in a while. Whether it's coming off a ball screen or meeting a pass, your catch gets a little further, their length and their talent that now becomes really tough to score, they get you really deep into the shot clock, and it is what it is. They did that to us. It's hard to beat a more talented team when you go 0 for 12 from 3, and they certainly forced us into a lot of tough shots.

On momentum swing following White's 3 pointers...

"It was good execution, I mean once again statistically, other than Rivera, they're more drivers than shooters, I don't know, it's hard to take away both with them to be completely honest with you. So our thing was, we're gonna make them shoot 3s, unfortunately for us, they did it. They're good players, they can beat you in different ways, and I think John had them ready to play today. They certainly, unfortunately for us, didn't look past us. Were capable of playing a little bit harder, but we rebounded ok. We just struggled to score the basketball, in large part because of them"

Early fouls...

"Fouls are part of the game. The next guys gotta be ready, what're you gonna do..."

Minutes for freshmen...

"They're freshmen and we have high hopes for them. This is an up-level game; a lot of young kids have to realize it starts with defense and the ability to execute on offense. Toughest transition for a freshman is their used to being the scorer or making the spectacular plays. As we move forward, it's gonna be guys ability to execute that'll allow them to be successful.
