Hoyas Travel to Connecticut and Rutgers This Weekend

April 10, 2014

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (4-7, 1-1 BIG EAST) will head out on the road for a pair of contests this weekend. The Hoyas will face the University of Connecticut (7-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon, before traveling to New Jersey on Sunday for a matchup with Rutgers University (6-6, 0-2 BIG EAST). This is the first of back-to-back two-game weekends for the Blue & Gray.

Last weekend, Georgetown picked up its first BIG EAST Conference win of the season with a 12-5 victory over the Marquette University Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. GU used a 7-0 second half to get past the Golden Eagles and snap a six-game skid.

Senior midfielder Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) led the way with a career-high six goals, while six additional players found the back of the cage for the Blue & Gray. Freshman goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) tallied her first-career victory with three saves on the afternoon.

Georgetown held significant advantages in shots (34-10), ground balls (25-17) and draw controls (12-7), while forcing 20 Golden Eagles turnovers. GU was especially impressive in the second half allowing just two MU shots.

On Tuesday, Freedman was named the BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Prior to her career day against Marquette, she tallied a hat trick in an 8-6 setback to Penn earlier in the week, while adding four draw controls and two ground balls. It was Freedman's first-career weekly award after earning a pair of nods to the weekly honor role last season.

Freedman leads the squad in scoring with 30 points on 25 goals and five assists. Junior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) is second, and sophomore attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) is third with 24 and 22 points, respectively. Tarzian has 20 goals and four assists, while Etchison has tallied 14 goals and a team-best eight assists.

Senior attacker Reilly Woodman (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes) has pulled in a squad-best 32 draw controls, while junior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) has posted 18 caused turnovers.

Fisher has tallied 34 saves in 11 games played.

Connecticut extended its winning streak to six games on Saturday night, defeating Rutgers 12-11 on the road in overtime. Senior midfielder Lauren Kahn was the hero for the Huskies in the win, scoring the game-winner with 3:34 remaining in overtime. Kahn finished the game with three goals on seven shots.

Georgetown is 13-0 against the Huskies and 5-0 on the road. Last season, GU won, 9-6, at home as junior Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) led the Hoyas by tying her career high with four goals. The last win on the road against Connecticut was April 1, 2011 where the Blue & Gray won, 14-12.

Last weekend, RU fell to UConn, 12-11 in overtime, in the squad's conference home opener. The game was Rutgers' first overtime match of the season, and its first since the 2012 campaign. Despite leading 7-3 at halftime, the Scarlet Knights found themselves down 11-10 with time expiring in regulation.

Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kristin Kocher (Medford, N.J.) led the squad with five points (4G, 1A) and five draw controls, while Amanda Turturro also recorded four goals. Kocher was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 8 for her career day against the Huskies.

The Hoyas are 20-3 all-time against the Scarlet Knights with a mark of 10-2 on the road. Last year, Georgetown won in New Jersey by a score of 13-5. Meghan Farrell (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Visitation) led the Hoyas with three goals while six other Hoyas scored.

The opening draw on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m., in Storrs, Conn. Live stats and a webcast will be available through GUHoyas.com. On Sunday, the game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
