Hoffstot, Carlson Place Eighth Overall at Senior World Rowing Championships

Sept. 2, 2014

WASHINGTON - Georgetown men's rowing alums Henry Hoffstot (C'12) and Jack Carlson (C'09), representing the United States, finished second in the B final on Friday afternoon to place eighth overall at the Senior World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. The two former Hoyas were racing together in the coxed pair event.

The United States crossed the finish line in 6:53.32 to finish second in a tight B final. The Red, White & Blue were less than four seconds behind Italy (6:49.62) and slightly more than four seconds ahead of Australia (6:57.7).

The time of 6:53.32 for the U.S. was the sixth-fastest time overall in both the A and B finals as it beat both South Africa (7:02.40) and the Netherlands (7:07.73), who finished fifth and sixth in the A final, respectively.

This was Hoffstot's first appearance for the U.S. Senior National Team and Carlson's second. Carlson previously competed for the United States at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Slovenia, finishing fifth in the lightweight eight. The duo, along with their third crewmate Taylor Brown, qualified for Amsterdam by winning the trials of the men's pair with coxswain in June, while competing for Penn AC.

"It was a huge honor to represent the USA at the world championships in Amsterdam, and to represent Georgetown on the U.S. team," Carlson said. "It was especially great having two Hoyas in the same crew. I think we really stepped up our game and had a gutsy final race. We would like to have been a little quicker to beat Italy, but it was nice to beat Australia and France, two countries that have traditionally been very strong in this event, and also Ukraine and Russia. I know we are all tremendously grateful to all the members of the Georgetown community who supported us this summer and made it possible for us to train and to get to the starting line in Europe."
