Women's Lacrosse Holds Annual Banquet

Sept. 23, 2014 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad held its annual banquet Saturday evening at the Key Bridge Marriott. The banquet honored the 2014 squad for its accomplishments with the graduated seniors returning for the event. The eight team awards were announced and the squad's achievements were recognized.

There was also the debut of two new awards for the Blue & Gray.

The Star Award was given to the player to earn the most stars throughout the season. Stars were given following each game by meeting statistical goals. Senior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) won the Star Award after an outstanding campaign. She also won the Bulldog Award, given to a player that displayed outstanding effort and contributions to the squad, for the second-consecutive season.

Devine was a Second Team All-Region performer for the Hoyas. She was a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree and unanimous selection after starting in all 20 games. She had two goals for the year and led the squad in caused turnovers and ground balls with 39 and 33, respectively. Devine was third in draw controls pulling in 41. The defender earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in April marking her first-career weekly award.

She is among the all-time career leaders in caused turnovers with 65. Devine is also fourth on GU's season listing with 39 caused turnovers in 2014.

The second new award was the Red Star Award given to the player that best prepared the team for that week's opponent. This was awarded to junior midfielder Kelsey Perselay (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) who appeared in all 20 games for the Blue & Gray. She tallied two goals on the season against Villanova and Cincinnati and pulled in 24 draw controls. Perselay also picked up a pair of ground balls and caused two turnovers.

The Sheehan Stanwick Rookie of the Year award went to sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron). Fisher appeared in all 20 games with 13 starts to her credit. She had 84 saves in the cage and posted a record of 6-6.

Graduate Courtney Caputo (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) was named the Most Improved Player after making a significant impact as a senior. The midfielder appeared in all 20 games with 18 starts and was the sixth-leading scorer on the squad with 19 goals and four assists for 23 points. Caputo was 3-of-9 on free position shots and had 14 ground balls along with eight draw controls and nine turnovers. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 15. Her numbers jumped significantly last season as Caputo took on a larger role in her final year.

Graduate attacker Reilly Woodman (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's and St. Agnew) was given the Denis Kanach Hoya Award which recognizes the unsung hero who best demonstrates unselfish play and true team spirit. Woodman started all 20 games after just one-career start prior to 2014. She scored 19 goals with three assists for 22 points to rank seventh on the squad. Woodman also managed 47 draw controls as well as picking up 12 ground balls.

Graduate defender MJ Coyle (Kensington, Md./Holy Child) was the winner of the Kim Simons Coaches' Award for the player that best demonstrates the qualities of coachability, positive attitude and leadership. This is the second-consecutive season she has won the award. The team captain appeared in all 20 games with 14 starts on defense. Coyle managed 18 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and four draw controls while also leading by example off the field. She was also active on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as an officer.

Finally, graduate midfielder Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) was named the 2014 Team MVP. Freedman was a two-time All-South Region honoree and named First Team All-BIG EAST marking the second conference award of her career, this time as a unanimous selection. She was selected the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week once in 2014 and led the team in goals with 37 and ranked second in points with 45. Freedman also posted eight assists. The co-captain led the squad in ground balls (33), draw controls (47), free-position goals (15) and was second in caused turnovers with 27.

The midfielder is ranked among the career and season all-time leaders in draw controls. She ranks among the career leaders in points (120), goals (98) and caused turnovers (68) as well as sitting at seventh on the all-time list in draw controls (135). Freedman is also among some of Georgetown's best in a season in both draw controls (46, 47) and caused turnovers (27).

The coaching staff also chooses to recognize a person that has made a significant impact on the squad. This year, Director of Equipment and Transportation Josh LaRosa awarded the Dr. Christopher Joyner 13th Man Appreciation Award, given to the person who contributes to the program behind the scenes.

The night concluded with the playing of the 2014 highlight video and remarks from both the Class of 2014 and the Class of 2015 including a poem on the graduated seniors.

Georgetown completed the 2014 season with a record of 11-9 and its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. The Hoyas advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and also appeared in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game.

The Hoyas will begin fall play next weekend with Navy on Friday at home and Virginia on Saturday at Multi-Sport Field.
