Sept. 26, 2014 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team moved to 4-4 after defeating the Siena Saints, 1-0, at the Siena Field Turf on Friday, Sept. 26. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) started in cage for the Hoyas and recorded her second career shutout.
On the offensive end, sophomore defender Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) scored her first career goal, that proved to be the game-winner for the Hoyas at the 63:07 mark. Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J./Oak Knoll) provided the assist. Holmes found the back of the net off a penalty corner that was inserted by Louise Chakejian (Chester Springs, Pa./The Episcopal Academy).
Georgetown had several offensive opportunities early in the match earning two penalty corners within one minute of each other at 6:52 and 7:54. The Hoyas took three more penalty corners in the first half but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. The Saints threatened to score the first goal of the game at 34:16, but Skonecki came up with the save and both teams went into half-time scoreless.
Both GU and Siena traded shots throughout the second half but were unable to capitalize until 63:07 when Holmes found the back of the cage.
Siena had an opportunity to tie the game at 68:17 when Megan Bohse set up for a penalty stroke, but Skonecki made the save, her second of the game, and time wound down securing the GU win.
"While we are happy with the result of today's match, we have much to improve upon," said Head Field Hockey Coach Shannon Soares. "We'll need to do a better job of taking advantage of our attacking opportunities and executing set pieces. Credit to goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki for making a great save on a stroke that allowed us to hold the lead in the final minutes. We will quickly turn our attention and focus on a very talented Columbia squad."
The Hoyas have another quick turnaround as they travel to New York City to take on Columbia on Sunday at noon. The Lions sit at 4-2, and they play Cornell on Saturday at noon before facing the Hoyas.
