Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team fell to 4-5 on the season after dropping a contest against Columbia, 8-1, in New York City on Sunday afternoon.

Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J./Oak Knoll) scored her third goal of the season at 58:41 in the game to prevent the shutout. Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) provided the assist on the three-on-two play that saw Butterfield tip in the ball from the front of the cage.

Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) started in goal for the Hoyas and recorded eight saves, a career high that matches her effort in a 4-1 loss to Brown on Sept. 14, to bring her total to 37 on the season.

Columbia was first on the board at the 6:13 mark in the first half when the Lions scored off a rebound following a penalty corner to make it 1-0. The Lions threatened at 18:19 but Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) had a defensive save and prevented the goal. Columbia scored at 22:43 to make it 2-0.

GU threatened following penalty corners at 28:16 and 28:48, but shots by Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and Butterfield were blocked and went wide.

The Lions found the back of the net at 30:10 and increased their lead to 3-0. Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) had another shot for Georgetown at 30:24 but was blocked; the teams traded possessions until 35:00 when Columbia scored its fourth goal of the half to go into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

The second half started in a similar fashion as the first as Columbia scored its fifth goal at 37:51. Thompson nearly broke the defense at 41:56 for the first Hoya goal, but the Lions had a defensive save.

Columbia continued its offensive attack and scored its sixth goal of the game at 52:04 to extend its lead to 6-0. The teams engaged in a back-and-forth until 58:41 when Butterfield took advantage of a three-on-two and scored the lone goal of the game for the Blue & Gray to make the score 6-1. The Lions responded with a goal at 63:02 that made the score 7-1.

Weinberg had another opportunity at 65:48 but Columbia goalie Kendall Kuntz made the save. Columbia took advantage of a green card given to Weinberg at 67:18 and scored the eighth and final goal of the game at 67:33, the scoreboard remained at 8-1 as time ran out and the Lions sealed the victory.

Up next for GU is a meeting with the Huskies of UConn in Storrs, Conn., on Saturday, Oct. 4 at noon. The game will be the first BIG EAST contest for both teams.
