WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (1-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell Saturday afternoon to Lock Haven 2-1 on Multi-Sport Field, the first game on campus for the team since the 2007 season. Freshman forward
Megan Parsons (Chester Springs, Pa./ Villa Maria) scored the lone goal for the Hoyas.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for the first 10 minutes as the teams traded possessions and made runs deep into the opposing team's attacking circle that proved unsuccessful, thanks to two saves by GU goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki (Mechanisburg, Pa./The Red Land). At the 18:30 mark in the first half Rachel Valentine of Lock Haven found the back of the net for the game's first goal. The junior forward shot the ball from the middle of the circle after a ball from teammate Nakira Downes found her stick.
The game continued to be back-and-forth until the end of the first half.
Coming back from half-time, both GU and LHU traded shots, but a combination of defensive efforts and goalie play kept the score at 1-0 until Lydia George was able to shoot the ball past Skonecki off a rebound at the 53:19 mark in the second half, to extend Lock Haven's lead to 2-0.
Louise Chekajian (Chester Springs, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) took a penalty corner for the Blue & Gray at the 61:19 mark that resulted in the third career goal for Parsons. Her ball found the bottom right of the cage and put the Hoyas on the board.
Georgetown picked up momentum following the goal; however, Lock Haven was able to maintain possession and run the clock out the last five minutes of the game.
Skonecki had a total of six saves for the Hoyas, which brings her total saves to eight for the year.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 as they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross and then go to Providence, R.I., on Sunday, Sept. 14 to play against Brown. Both games are set to begin at noon.
