Jan. 27, 2015 WASHINGTON - Senior field hockey player Tori Hideshima (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) has added another highlight to her final year at Georgetown University, having her artwork featured in a Mazda display at the Washington Auto Show.
The converted forward, who played in a total of 10 games this season and scored her first career goal on senior day against Towson, won the Mazda sponsored competition as part of Professor L. Collier Hyams' Introduction to Graphic Design curriculum. The students were to create concept art for a five-door Mazda 3 as a way to celebrate the company's new factory in Salamanca, Mexico.
Hideshima's design was choosen from a total of 100 entries, five from each of the 20 students in the class, and is a combination between modern and Aztec art.
"It was really an unbelievable experience finding out that I had won the art design contest for Mazda," Hideshima said.
The designs were submitted mid-December with the winners announced in early January. The company's director of design then narrowed the submissions down to 10, from which employees selected the top three designs.
"Designing our Mazda artwork was a big project for the class," said Hideshima. "I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the history of art cars, and working with my classmates. I am very grateful to Professor Hyams for providing us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to do something like design an art car."
The Washington Car Show, and Hideshima's winning design, will be on display until Sunday, Feb. 1 at the convention center.
