Providence, R.I. - The Georgetown field hockey team (5-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell behind early and was unable to get back in the match, as Providence (2-9, 1-0 BIG EAST) scored two goals in the first 12 minutes and never looked back, going on to win, 4-1, at the Lennon Family Field on Friday afternoon. Freshman Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia High School) scored her third goal of the season in the second half for the Hoyas in the loss.
The Friars struck quickly, as Emily Matthews put them on the board five minutes and three seconds into the match, redirecting a shot from Jackie Fusco into the Georgetown cage.
Friar Megan Hamilton would extend Providence's lead just six minutes later, after centering a feed from Emma Mackie. The Friars would take 10 more shots in the first half, but the Hoyas would keep Providence from capitalizing, keeping the score 2-0 at the half.
Georgetown played more aggressive in the second half, registering four shots and two penalty corners, but it would be Providence who would tally two more goals. Friar Corinne Kenny scored on a penalty corner while Hamilton tipped in her second goal of the night, off an assist from Emily Humiston.
Masiello caged GU's only score with less than six minutes remaining the game. Masiello leads Georgetown in goals scored with three this season.
Junior goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) stopped eight shots, but allowed four goals in the loss.
The Hoyas will look to bounce back with a non-conference matchup on the road against Brown on Sunday at noon.
