WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team (8-9, 1-3) earned an edge with 14 total shots and 10 penalty corners in an impressive second half, but ultimately came up short in a 6-3 loss to Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon.
Seniors Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Hathaway Brown) and Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J. / Oak Knoll) and junior Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./ Wyoming Seminary) each scored for the Blue & Gray while Georgetown keeper Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) recorded nine saves.
Saint Joseph's Melanie Colozzi scored four minutes into the game off an assist from Taylor Leonhardt from across the circle. Anna Willcocks added a second for the Hawks two minutes later as she dribbled her way into the circle and fired low.
The Hoyas responded with a goal from Weinberg at the 15:25 mark as she converted on a penalty corner. The shot was assisted by Louise Chakejian. Skonecki would register five saves for GU in the first half, but Saint Joseph's would cage two more goals for a 4-1 lead heading into the half.
In the second half, Georgetown would take control of the game offensively as the Hoyas posted 14 shots to Saint Joseph's 10. GU also led Saint Joseph's, 10-2, in penalty corners but it wasn't enough to keep the Hawks from cushioning their lead with two more goals.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, Georgetown stayed relentless and pushed for two more goals. The first came from Butterfield, who made a deflection on a penalty corner. The shot was assisted by Weinberg. Holmes added the last goal of the game as she rebounded a shot from Weinberg. Weinberg would put up two more shots in the last seconds of the game but the victory would go to the Hawks, 6-3.
Georgetown will now look ahead to its next game, a noon home contest against No.2 UConn on Saturday, Oct. 31.
