No.2 University of Connecticut proved too much for Georgetown University field hockey as the Huskies shut out the Hoyas, 8-0, in the Blue & Gray's last BIG EAST game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. The defending National Champions (18-0, 5-0 BIG EAST) were led by Charlotte Veitner with four goals and one assist.
The Blue & Gray (8-10, 1-4 BIG EAST) kept UConn out of the goal for the first 10 minutes of action, but found itself on the defensive for most of the game, with only two shots coming from senior Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J. / Oak Knoll) and junior Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./ Wyoming Seminary) in the second half. Hoya keepers Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) and Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa. / New Hope-Solebury) split time in goal, combining for eight saves.
The Huskies earned a total of 18 penalty corners to GU's two, and scored on three of those. Four of UConn's goals came in the first half, including consecutive goals from Roisin Upton. Casey Umstead scored on a penalty corner while Veitner dribbled in along the baseline for her goal to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, UConn reeled off four goals on 12 shots. Veitner led the way, scoring three of the four goals in a span of eight minutes. Umstead netted the final goal at the 55:28 mark off a penalty corner. Karlie Heistand was credited with the assist.
The Hoyas will conclude the weekend with a visit to William & Mary on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats for the game can be found at www.guhoyas.com.
