Georgetown Falters, Drops 2-1 Decision Against Brown

Oct. 4, 2015

Final Stats

Providence, R.I. - Despite owning a 12-9 shot advantage and posting nine penalty corners, the Georgetown field hockey (5-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) team suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of Brown (5-5, 1-1 Ivy League) on Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Field.

"After allowing an early goal against a gritty Brown team, I thought we fought hard to dig ourselves out of that hole and were able to tie the game up at one," Georgetown Head Coach Shannon Soares said. "We led in both shots and APC's, but we fell asleep at the wheel for the last two minutes of regulation and allowed a circle penetration. Credit to Brown for taking advantage of the opportunity. This is an honest game and it rewards teams who can stay sharp in critical moments. We will have to turn the page quickly as we will work to prepare for another weekend on the road against two tough opponents in Old Dominion and Longwood."

The Hoyas once again found themselves down 1-0 in the first half, as Brown notched the first goal of the game at the 6:29 mark. Capitalizing off a penalty corner, Anna Masini caged her first goal of the season with an assist from Hannah Rogers.

GU was awarded three penalty corners over the rest of the half, but could not find the back of the net as the Bears entered intermission with a 1-0 lead.

In the opening minutes of the second half, consecutive Brown fouls earned Georgetown back-to-back penalty corners. The Hoyas took advantage and this time found the back of the cage. Sophomore Megan Parsons (Chester Springs, Pa. / Villa Maria) drove through the endline, feeding the ball to Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia High School) who slammed home the equalizer in front of the net.

Georgetown's offense continued its strong play, racking up three more penalty corners and eight shots over the half, but Brown found a way to stop the GU attack and get the ball behind the defense and score the game-winning goal. Alexis Miller tallied the game-winner as she drove into the arc with less than two minutes left in the game, giving Brown a 2-1 victory.

Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J. / Oak Knoll) paced the Hoya offense with a game-best five shots including two shots on goal, while Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Hathaway Brown) recorded two shots on goal. Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa. / Villa Maria) also notched two shots and Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa. / Harrisburg Academy) and Grace Hanrahan (West Roxbury, Ma. / Winsor School) each chipped in a shot.

Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) suffered the loss in goal, playing a full 70 minutes and making two saves. Brown's Katie Hammaker earned the win with seven saves.

The Hoyas will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. Georgetown will follow with a trip to Longwood in Farmville, Va. on Oct.11 at 1 p.m.
