WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa. / Villa Maria) put the Georgetown University field hockey team on the board first, but William & Mary responded with three unanswered goals to hand the Hoyas a 3-1 setback at Busch Field on Sunday afternoon.
In Georgetown's last game of the season, the Hoyas were led by senior Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Hathaway Brown) with three shots and junior Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa. / Harrisburg Academy) with two shots. In goal for the Blue & Gray, junior Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) recorded 16 saves when she faced 33 shot attempts.
The Hoyas and the Tribe remained scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play, until Hickey opened the scoring off a deflection from a shot by Graves-Brown forcing the Tribe to a timeout.
Coming off the break, the Blue & Gray followed up with a penalty corner and a shot from freshman Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia High School), but it would be William & Mary to net the next goal. At the 25:12 mark, Emma MacLeod dug the ball out from underneath and connected with Erin Menges to tie the game at one.
The Tribe took the lead just a minute later as Pippin Saunders decked into the circle and fired from high to net her 13th goal of the season. William & Mary closed out the scoring with a goal in the 45th minute to finalize the score at 3-1 in favor of the Tribe.
The Hoyas conclude the 2015 season with an 8-11 overall record.
