Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III
Regarding frantic finishes and feeling after the game …
Disappointing. We had our chances but they continuously made the plays they had to do to win. (Rashun) Davis is one tough nut. A tough kid that makes winning plays. And not just the shot down there at the end. You got to give Mike (Jones) and his group all the credit. They came in here and played tough. Both teams could have packed it in and we both kept fighting back-and-forth, back-and-forth and then a big-time player hits a big-time shot to win it.
Regarding the play where Tre Campbell and L.J. Peak stole the ball to tie the score at the end of regulation …
We were down. We were pressing and had to get up into [Rashun Davis] and so he turned it over. One of the few mistakes he made the whole night.
Regarding rebounding and hustle plays and how they determined outcome of game …
Significantly.
Regarding Georgetown's ball handling …
It's too early to go through all that. I think, in general, they made the plays they needed to make to win the game. We didn't get the stops we needed. We didn't get the rebounds that we needed to win. That being said, you make your foul shots, you make your open shots, you win. We shoot 19-for-20 in the first half, and 2-for-7 in the second half.
Regarding if upcoming schedule had impact on today's game …
I don't think so. They just outplayed us. Who knows what's in these kids minds, but we were focused. We knew that we were playing a veteran team. We knew we were playing against a very good team. (Rashun) Davis, the margin of victory was whatever it was last year, but he had a similar game last year against us. And so it was no surprise coming into this game what he could do. It was not a secret. We watched the clips and he played very well against us last year. If you are asking were we looking ahead, I don't think so. I don't know. We'll go back and we'll talk about it, but I told this group every single game on this schedule is tough. There is nothing easy. You play against team like that that has gone to the postseason, has won 22-23 games last couple of years, has all those seniors on the team. They know how to win, they know what it takes and they are coming here to win. I don't think we were looking ahead, I think they just beat us.
Regarding any positives to take away …
I don't feel like any right now. I may feel differently later, but I can't think of any right now.
Regarding Radford's success off of baseline curls …
Yes. It was not a surprise. We knew that was coming. At the end of the day, good players made good plays for them. We weren't tricked or fooled, they just came off and executed, set good screens for each other and shooters shot. The guys they wanted to get the shot for got the shot and they went in.

On Georgetown's performance …
"I just think, in the first half, I started off flat and it carried over to the rest of the team. For the most part, I take the blame for how we started the game off and, coming down the stretch, we just needed to make plays we felt like we usually make and we got a lot of open shots that we just didn't make."
What does Georgetown need to do on Tuesday to get off to a better start …
"Just rebound. I mean, if we rebound and take away half the second shots that they got, I think we would have won the game. If we make our open shots, we got a lot of good looks at the basket that we didn't make. And we need to defend. Like I said, I started off flat. I think for the most part for the first half I'll take the blame for it."
As a unit how does Georgetown shut down turnovers …
"Just being confident, being confident with the ball. I had a couple turnovers just trying to force the issue, but I think we'll fine tune it."
Senior Center Bradley Hayes
What lead to Radford outrebounding Georgetown …
"I think it was heart. They just wanted it more than we did in the moment and it's just that simple."
On looking forward …
"I think we learn from it. We go back and we watch film, see what we did wrong and get ready for Maryland on Tuesday."
Radford Head Coach Mike Jones
"wow what a college basketball game, what a way to start the season. Just two teams I think fighting and scrapping. Good plays, bad plays on both sides of the ball. I was just really proud of the way our guys battled. We were outsized at every position, there's just so many advantages but our guys have a lot of heart. I really love this team, you know they care about each other, they compete for one another, and they got themselves a good win to start the season."
On Rashun Davis play under pressure…
"Rashun is a competitor man, you know I tell him all the time, I tell him to his face, I tell him in front of his teammates that I think he's one of the best competitors I've ever played with. It started his freshman year when we had a senior point guard, well actually I think he might have a, yeah he was a sophomore point guard, but he was our starting point guard the first year, and one of the first drills that we ever did Rashun's team was down 10-7 and we played 11-point games and he stole the ball from that kid two times in a row and went down and scored it and I just knew right then I said "man we got something here.' So he's a warrior man, he's gonna play no matter who we play. He's unafraid and ready to lead our team. I thought he did a great job of leading the team today"
On whether he expected to use the baseline pick-and-curl as much as he did…
"As the game goes on you kind of see what's working and you know the one action that we ran we were getting some good stuff off of, we actually had about three options that we were running that was working for us and we just starting going to that late and our guys just delivered. There were a lot of different ways that they scored off of it so it wasn't just one thing but I think it gave them confidence, of something that we could run and we could get the ball where we wanted to go, to the people we wanted to and they took advantage of it."
On winning at Georgetown…
"It means there's gonna be a lot of pressure on the rest of the games (laughs). But no, t's fun man, it's just college basketball is so much fun, it goes so fast. I told these guys when they were freshman that it's gonna go fast man and all of a sudden they look up and it's their first game. I think Kion said in the huddle before the jump ball that this is the first game of our last year. First time we'll have a first game of the season. So you know it goes fast, so just for them to get out there and just enjoy it. Rashun talks all the time about, 'Hey let's have fun.' We do a lot of work and we work hard in practice but when the games going that's their time. I really have little control, a lot less control than I want when the games going on so it's time for them to have fun."
On his message when they fell behind…
"I just told them they made a run it's time for us to make ours, we just have to stay the course. And really these guys do the talking in the huddles, I don't have to talk as much about, "Hey, don't worry about that let it go,' and we talk all the time about having resolve, and things are always going to go wrong, they're always going to go wrong, you have to do some things right, but when things go wrong , how do you respond to that? And I thought our guys, when that happened we responded the right way and they responded by coming closer together. Our first couple years when something would happen then we'd go the other way, but now we're getting to the point where we're responding and coming together. A lot of bad things happened down the stretch, and we gave Georgetown opportunities to win the game but we stayed together and we were able to finish it."
Radford Senior Guard Rashun Davis
On the steals at the end of regulation…
"Before the game we talked about how they're gonna make their runs, they're gonna get their shots and things like that but we have to stay poised and we had to have resolve like coach said. So we all just try to stay close together and talk to one another, say like that person messed up, just talk to them and keep them in the game, keep their head, so we just try to do stuff like that."
On how Georgetown defending him in the second half and did it tire him out…
"No sir that didn't tire me out"
"No it didn't tire me out but the missed free throws just stayed on my mind but coach told me that I have to just keep with it and just make the next one and get back on defense and continue to lead the team and that's what I'm trying to do."
On the last play…
"My teammates and my coaches were telling me to stay in attack-mode and stay aggressive so I just thought when I saw that opportunity to take it I just wanted to help my team win."
(Coach Jones): "I knew it was going down. I yelled "Win the game!" (laughs). Yeah he's a competitor man, he missed a couple early and I could see how he reacted when he missed it and I said, 'Man don't worry about it, don't worry about those, we can't do anything about it but I had confidence that he was gonna make that shot, I knew he was going to make that shot."
On the trip at the end of regulation…
"I didn't even know that guy was behind me, sometimes I just get tunnel vision but I don't know I have to think more and like coach said I have to become a better leader and I have to slow things down. Sometimes I speed things up and stuff like that."
On what the win means for his program…
"This team right here, I was just talking to coach the other day about how much I love this team. We have incredible chemistry and I feel like we enjoy this win and continue on throughout the season. We gotta take it one game at a time."
