Dillon, Smith and Webber Named Georgetown Baseball Captains

Dec. 15, 2015

WASHINGTON - Head Coach Pete Wilk and the Georgetown baseball team have selected the three captains for the upcoming 2015 season. Seniors Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic University), Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) will lead the Hoyas this spring.

"I think this club is in good shape with these three at the helm," Wilk said. "They all work hard, compete well and have a team-first attitude, which I think is a critical component of good leadership."

Dillon is entering his senior season, and second on the Hilltop, after transferring from Catholic University. In his first season in a Georgetown uniform, Dillon appeared in 34 games, with 20 starts, at five different positions. Originally a middle infielder, Dillon made appearances at second base, shortstop, third base, left field and center field as well as two starts as the team's designated hitter. He started the season with hits in each of his first three at-bats and finished the season batting .250 (17-for-68) with four doubles, nine RBI and 12 runs scored.

Smith is coming off one of the best seasons in program history by a Georgetown pitcher. As a junior, Smith was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team after tying the program record with 78 strikeouts while posting a 4-5 record with a 2.80 ERA in 86.2 innings pitched over 14 starts. He led the entire BIG EAST in strikeouts, and ranked among the conference leaders in ERA and innings pitched. Smith pitched two complete games, including against top-seeded St. John's in the BIG EAST Tournament. He had a career-high eight strikeouts on four separate occasions and had six starts of giving up just one earned run or less. He currently ranks seventh in the Georgetown record books with 165 career strikeouts.

Webber played in 41 games last season as a junior, starting at both catcher and designated hitter. He finished the season batting .229 (27-for-118) with six doubles, eight RBI and 21 runs scored. His .424 on-base percentage was second on the team and Webber led the Hoyas with 30 walks, 10 hit-by-pitches and seven sacrifice bunts. He tied for second in the BIG EAST in walks, ranked fifth in on-base percentage and was in the top 10 in sacrifice bunts. In the Georgetown record books, Webber is tied for third all-time with 19 career sacrifice bunts. He needs just three to pass Andy Lentz (2009-12) for first place. Defensively, Webber threw out six potential base stealers including three in eight BIG EAST games behind the plate.

The Hoyas open the 2016 season on Friday, February 19, playing Wake Forest at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Blue & Gray are coming off of a memorable 2015 season that saw the squad qualify for the BIG EAST Championships for the first time in 29 years.
