Georgetown Opens BIG EAST Play at Xavier and Butler

Dec. 28, 2015

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown women's basketball team (7-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) will open BIG EAST Conference play on Tuesday at Xavier University as part of a two-game road swing to begin the conference season. The Hoyas will follow that up with a contest at Butler University on Thursday, Dec. 31. Both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

On Monday, sophomore guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts in an 82-46 win over the Towson University Tigers (2-8) in the nonconference finale last week at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas completed nonconference play with a mark of 7-3 and 3-0 at home.

Adomako led the way for the Hoyas with 19 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) managed 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc. In total, all 11 available Hoyas scored at least two points, and pulled down at least two rebounds.

The Hoyas shot 40.0 percent (28-of-70) from the field, and outrebounded the Tigers, 52-40, as well as forcing 17 turnovers. The defense held Towson to just 20.8 percent shooting from the field (11-of-53).

It was the largest margin of victory under Head Coach Natasha Adair, and the biggest win since a 77-38 victory over Dartmouth University on Dec. 30, 2011.

The weekly honor marks the fourth of Adomako's career and the third for her this season. Georgetown has had five nods to the honor roll for the 2015-16 campaign.

Freshman point guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) is leading the team in scoring with 14.3 ppg and has posted 5.8 rpg, 3.8 apg and 3.1 spg. Adomako is second with 14.1 ppg as well as a team-best 6.0 rpg. Junior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) rounds out the top three with 11.3 ppg as well as 4.6 rpg.

Georgetown holds a +4.8 rebounding margin over opponents and is shooting 39.9 percent on the season. The Blue & Gray also holds a +2.7 turnover margin. The Hoyas are currently 2-3 away from the friendly confines of McDonough Arena.

Xavier senior Aliyah Zantt scored a career-high 24 points as the Musketeers erased an early 16-point deficit to post a 62-59 come-from-behind victory over Kennesaw State last week. XU ended nonconference play with a 9-2 mark, including four-straight wins. The Musketeers have spent almost the entire nonconference season at home with just one away game, a 92-54 loss at Michigan.

The Hoyas are 2-5 all-time against the Musketeers after three losses a season ago. GU inched closer with each meeting falling by eight, 63-55, in January, five (60-55) in February and just three points, 70-67, in the BIG EAST Tournament in March. The last GU victory was a 56-37 win at the 2013-14 BIG EAST Tournament. Georgetown has never won in Cincinnati.

Butler's Belle Obert hit a game-tying 3-point field goal with seven seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, but Indiana State would outscore BU, 11-4, over the final five minutes to record a 70-63 victory last week at the Hulman Center. The Bulldogs are 5-6 overall and will face Villanova University in the conference opener on Tuesday.

Georgetown is 1-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, but 0-2 on the road. GU fell in both meetings last season. The lone Hoya victory was an 85-79 win during the 2013-14 campaign. All four meetings have come in BIG EAST Conference regular season play.

The opening tip at Xavier is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Thursday's contest is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games at www.GUHoyas.com.

The games will be broadcast live and for free on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
