Smith, Carter Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

Feb. 16, 2015

WASHINGTON - Junior right-handed pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and senior first baseman AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) of the Georgetown baseball team have been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference on Monday. It is the first set of weekly awards of the 2015 season.

In Georgetown's tough 3-0 loss to Delaware on Friday, Smith pitched seven shutout innings for the Hoyas with seven strikeouts. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and only gave up three hits total. He shut down the Delaware offense in order in four of his seven innings.

Carter batted .333 (4-for-12) in the Hoyas three games over the weekend, including hitting at a .500 clip with three RBI. In GU's 8-5 win over Bucknell on Saturday, Carter had a two-run double in a seven-run fourth inning that proved to be the game-winning RBI.

This is Carter's first career weekly award and the fifth for Smith, who was named to the Honor Roll four times last season. In all, the Hoyas earned 14 BIG EAST weekly awards in 2014.

Georgetown (1-2) will play a midweek game at D.C. rival George Washington on Wedesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Colonials' Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia. Next weekend, February 20-22, GU will open its home schedule with a three-game series against Fairfield at Shirley Povich Field.
