Feb. 18, 2015 WASHINGTON - The UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic, scheduled for this weekend (Feb. 20-22) in Greensboro, N.C. has been cancelled in its entirety due to inclement weather from Winter Storm Octavia.
GU is 5-3 coming off of a 3-1 weekend at the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington. Senior pitcher Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) went 3-0 over the weekend, striking out 18 over 17 innings and posting an ERA of 0.41. She also knocked in a pair of runs and scored three times. For her work, she was selected as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday, Feb. 16, it was the third time in her career that she has earned the honor.
Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) was also recognized for her performance in Wilmington, N.C., as she was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. The senior batted .250 with four RBI, two runs, a triple, a stolen base and her third home run of the year, she currently leads the team in slugging percentage at .750.
Georgetown will return to action when it travels to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the Citrus Classic, taking place from Feb. 27 through March 1. The Hoyas are scheduled to take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Notre Dame on Feb. 27, Indiana and Fordham on Feb. 28 and Mississippi State on March 1.
