WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (1-4) lost, 12-4, to the No. 4/3 Duke University Blue Devils (8-0) Wednesday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoya defense couldn't match the potent Blue Devil offense to fall to its second ranked opponent of the season.
Senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the Hoyas with two goals, while freshman midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) and senior midfielder Lauren Schwalje (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored a goal apiece.
The Hoyas were outshot by the Blue Devils, 29-20, and fell short on the draw with eight to Duke's 10. Duke held the 18-15 advantage on ground balls and GU forced 13 Blue Devil turnovers while committing 15.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the loss in the cage despite a good day in net with nine saves in the contest.
Duke opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first five minutes, but at 25:05, Seibel turned the right corner and found the back of the cage to make it 2-1.
The Blue Devils answered with another goal, but the Hoya defense stepped it up to force a long possession stopping every Duke opportunity. This worked until 15:18, when the Blue Devils scored again to make it 4-1.
The Blue & Gray didn't back down when just a minute later, Schwalje attacked on the right side again to make it 4-2.
Duke ended the half with a 3-0 run including one free position on an open net when a foul forced Fisher behind the play to make it 7-2 going into the break.
Duke scored early in the second, but Georgetown kept fighting as Tarzian shot and the ball just bounced off the keeper's stick and into the net to make it 8-3.
Duke then rattled off four goals, before Tarzian connected on a free position shot to end the drought making it 12-4 with 5:26 remaining in the contest.
Tarzian's goal didn't spark the comeback the Blue & Gray was looking for as neither team found the back of the cage and GU eventually fell, 12-4.
The Hoyas conclude a four-game homestand and will head out on the road this weekend as the squad takes on the No. 13/13 University of Pennsylvania on Saturday at Franklin Field at 4 p.m. The game was scheduled to be played on Long Island, but was moved to Philadelphia due to poor field conditions.
