WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball squad took the rubber match from the Villanova Wildcats, 5-4, to win the series and move to 2-1 in BIG EAST play. Overall, the Hoyas stand at 12-15.
Senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) picked up her ninth win of the season in the circle. Hyson struck out four and also had three hits and two RBI in the victory.
Georgetown got off to a strong start as they scored three runs over the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) singled down the right field line to bring in Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) for the first run of the game. Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida now has a team-high 20 RBI.
The Hoyas added to the score in the bottom of the second as Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) doubled and scored Alessandra Gagicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) to go up 3-0. A single up the middle by Hyson scored Osterday and the score read 3-0 in favor of the Blue & Gray through two innings.
Villanova knocked in a run in the top of the third which made it 2-1. Georgetown responded in the bottom of the fifth, however as Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida knocked a hit into left center that brought in Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) for the 4-1 lead.
The Wildcats attempted a comeback in the top of the sixth as they scored two runs to shrink the Hoya lead down to one at 4-3, but a Hyson single in the bottom of the sixth brought in Kane which would put GU up 5-3.
Villanova kept clawing at the Hoya lead, adding a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-4, but a line drive to Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida at first base in the top of the seventh inning would squash the Wildcats comeback and give the Hoyas the series victory.
"Anytime you can get on the board first it just sets the tone," said Head Coach Pat Conlan. "I knew Meg (Hyson) was going to throw a good game by the first inning we had, I just knew we had to give her a couple of runs for support and she would do the rest and it worked out in our favor."
Georgetown returns to action when it hosts Drexel for a midweek matchup on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
