DENVER, Colo. - The No. 14 Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (6-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) started quickly, but could not overcome an 11-goal run by the No. 5 Denver Pioneers (7-2, 1-0 BIG EAST), falling 19-7 in their first trip to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the campus of University of Denver.
Sophomore midfielder Eduardo White (Littleton, Colo./Kent Denver) scored a team-high two goals, both in the fourth quarter, in his return home. The Pioneers nullified the Hoyas early lead by controlling time of possession. DU won 28-of-30 faceoffs and took 57 shots. Freshman goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) had a career-high 22 saves in the loss.
Senior midfielder William Flatley (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) put GU on the board first, clearing the ball across midfield and weaving through a pair of defenders to free his hands for the opening goal at the 12:52 mark in the first quarter.
Sophomore midfielder Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) scored unassisted four minutes later to put the Hoyas in front 2-0. Senior midfielder Mitch Hugdahl (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and beat the goalie to the top right corner to put the Blue & Gray in front 3-0 with 5:52 left in the first.
The Pioneers offense answered scoring seven straight goals to end the first quarter, as Connor Cannizzaro and Tyler Pace each scored twice during the run to put Georgetown behind, 7-3. DU continued to roll in the second quarter as Adamson scored twice and Cannizzaro added two more during an 11-goal run, holding Georgetown scoreless for over 10 minutes.
Senior attack Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) ended the streak, spinning around a defender to score at the 7:12 mark in the second quarter. But the Pioneers would take a 13-4 lead into the half.
Senior midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) scored an unassisted goal with 7:15 remaining in the third quarter to bring GU within nine goals, at 14-5. But Denver scored two more in the third to take a 16-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
White scored on an assist from freshman attack Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford), making the score 16-6. The Pioneers would score on the ensuing faceoff to extend their lead back to 11. White would add one more in his homecoming, as GU fell 19-7 to lose its first BIG EAST Conference game.
The Hoyas continue their BIG EAST schedule when they return to action on Saturday, April 4 at Providence College. The opening faceoff with the Friars is scheduled for 1 p.m.
