WASHINGTON - Despite 10 strikeouts over seven innings of work in the circle for senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), the Hoyas dropped a BIG EAST matchup versus the Creighton Bluejays, 2-1, to fall to 12-17 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Georgetown was originally scheduled to play three games over the weekend, but a combination of weather and field conditions caused Saturday's games to be postponed.
The Bluejays were first on the board in the top of the first inning, as a single to right center scored Liz Dike for the early 1-0 lead.
A combination of stellar pitching by Hyson and solid defensive play by the Hoyas limited the Bluejays to one hit in innings two through four. It was in the bottom of the fourth inning that Georgetown got on the board.
Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) reached first following a wild throw by the shortstop to the first baseman which allowed Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to score the run that made it 1-1.
Creighton scored what would be the game winning run in the top of the sixth as Jen Daro hit a solo shot that went over the left field fence to put the Bluejays up 2-1.
Georgetown recorded a hit in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to mount a comeback and the 2-1 score would be the final.
Freshman Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington), Hyson and Taylor Henry (Skyline, Va./Front Royal) recorded hits for the Blue & Gray.
Up next for the Hoyas is a BIG EAST series in New York versus the St. John's Red Storm. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Thursday with first pitch for game one scheduled for noon. The game will be carried live on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com or the WatchESPN app on mobile devices.
