Head Coach John Thompson III
Normally at this point I just say `questions,' but before we get to that I just have to say, what a class act that was on Seton Hall's part and Coach Willard's part to do that. He did not have to do that, that was class, that was unexpected, that was class. You work so hard, you never know how games are going to turn out, but it's one thing for me to say `we're going to put Tyler (Adams) out there and I'm willing to waste a timeout to bring him out, but it's another thing for the opposition to understand how important this was to us, to him and to understand that sometimes things are more important than whether the ball goes into the basket or not. I just have to take the time to point that out and thank him and just point out what a class act that was on their part.
On the activities leading up to the moment with Tyler Adams ...
There's only one thing I can think of that would have made it better. His mother Darlene, because of the weather couldn't make it up here. His father is in the back but that's the only thing I can think of that would have made it better. I was worried that he was so excited that something would happen to him just from being excited but I'm glad Isaac got the tip. It was a special moment and it was something that we decided to do and we were fortunate to get a waiver and it's something that I hope and think was special to Tyler.
On the condition of D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and how the team adjusted without him ...
We could have been better. I didn't know until 15-20 before the game, that's not something that we planned. He banged knees, tweaked his knee in the Butler game and he went out there and warmed up he said `I feel weak' so after meeting with the medical staff we decided, this was not a coach's decision, he couldn't play. It caught us off guard to be honest with you, but it's not serious and we don't anticipate him missing any part of the BIG EAST Tournament but we'll see.
On the process to get the NCAA waiver for Tyler Adams ...
For that we need to thank Dan Trump who was the liaison who worked with the NCAA to make that happen, but this was something that should have happened. I'm fortunate that the people who make those decisions thought that.
On Jabril Trawick's performance with D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera being out ...
I'm going to miss him, a lot. Now hopefully we have 10 or so more games together but it is Senior Night, they all were emotional he just showed his differently. It's an emotional time when you realize this is the last time in this building to wear this uniform with this group of guys. It's emotional. I remember my last game, he (Trawick) will remember this last game, they both will remember this game, and they all will remember this game for the rest of their lives. The performance today was needed, he played like a senior on a team whose key guy was out and I'm glad he's with us. Let's just say that.
On picking up the pace in the second half ...
We just wanted to get stops. I probably was as anxious going into that game as any in some time, so at halftime we said `hey score is 0-0, we have to go out there and play'. Then Jabril got us going to start the second half and then they clawed and fought their way back and we missed foul shots and it ends up being a tight game. But we always want to be aggressive and push it. As you've heard me say many times we lose focus, you have to stop and get the rebound first before you get out and transition.
Senior Tyler Adams
On what was it like putting on the uniform and playing today...
It felt a little weird at first. After I came out of the game I didn't have the normal intensity I usually have, getting after guys. But it felt good, especially being the last home game, getting the opportunity to do warm ups and getting the opportunity to be one of the players.
On how it felt to have not only the team, but the crowd acknowledge you at the start of the game
I really didnt know what to expect, I was getting a lot of text messages this week... a lot of phone calls. It was very emotional, I didnt have a lot of time to sit down and think about it because there was so much going on the last couple of days. It was probably what I expected.
On how he took this negative experience and turn it into a positive one here at Georgetown?
Like I've been telling people the past few years, I am not one to sit, mourn and pout because I know other people in life have worse situations than I have. I knew it wasn't the end of my life. Coach Thompson gave me the opportunity to stay a part of the team and It helped me get over it a lot easier than I would have. I attend every practice, game, road trip, so I was still a part of the team.
On reflecting back on this in 20-30 years what will he remember the most...
Honestly, the day coach told me because he brought the team together, when he told me I thought it was a joke.
On right before the tip, what was going through his head...
Honestly I was thinking about what move I was going to do, but the Seton Hall Coach, I thanked him after the game made it a lot easier for me.
Senior guard Jabril Trawick
On thoughts on today's game, especially how you channeled your emotion from the pre-game into the game?
Like I said on the TV interview Georgetown is a special place for me, I want to thank coach Thompson for giving me the opportunity to come play here because It changed my life. It helped me grow up as person and a basketball player over the past 4 years. It was just very emotional for me, my family was there so it meant a lot to me. Georgetown Is a special place to me.
Seton Hall Head Coach Kevin Willard
"We're not as deep as we were, so even though they didn't have D'Vauntes [Smith-Rivera] as a matter of being solid against them. I think we had a pretty good defensive line against them. Giving them easy buckets in the game wasn't going to be a smart idea.
On talking to JTII before the game and backing away from Tyler Adams during the game:
"I had heard a lot of great things about the young man. I was really glad that he was getting a chance to start. I told my kids before the game and said, `You know, guys, sometimes there's a bigger picture in life and just let him get it. I actually talked to Copeland. I didn't know what their plan was, but just tip it to him, let him score a layup. I was glad he listened to me, because I think, again, great kids should get rewarded in life and I think he's battled and it's great to see that happen."
On Georgetown's impact of mixing man and zone periodically...
"There zone hurt us a little bit. They did a good job getting in on [Sterling] Gibbs. They are a good defensive team. They've been playing a lot of zone, I think their length is tough. Then you get it inside and you deal with Hopkins, you deal with Josh Smith, and it's been very effective. It got on our shooters a little bit. I think we made a decent adjustment in the first half. We missed our free throws, and that hurt us."
On how different Georgetown looks with Tre Campbell for a run on the offense compared to D'Vauntes...
"They are actually a little bit quicker. Campbell has a little bit more of a motor. I think the difference is with D'Vauntes, he puts a little bit more pressure on you at all times, where I think they tried to go much more inside today. I think at times with D'Vauntes, they run a lot more things with him to try to get him some shots, I think that is what makes it tough."
On how important it is for them to pressure teams with the pace of the game.
"It's tough to go full court as give up easy buckets. Offensively is when we play our best and we can rebound. On the road, you have to control tempo a little bit, and they did a good job in transition."
On Sterling Gibbs performance... 22pts, 5-7 from 3, 5 asst, 1 stl.
"I thought he did well in the second half. Isaiah did a good job in the first half, passing the basketball and getting everyone involved. I thought he got going in the second half. Coming off a concussion, sometimes you need to see the bucket go in. Thought he did a great job."
