WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (2-8) lost, 12-3, to the No. 1/1 University of Maryland Terrapins (11-0) Wednesday evening at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas were patient early on and kept it close, but turnovers gave Maryland the edge as the Terps pulled away.

"I'm extremely disappointed in our ability to handle the ball, we talked about them being fast and athletic and we played into their hands clearing the ball and being timid on offense," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "On the flip side, I'm really proud of the defense. I thought it was our best defensive effort of the year, everybody bought into the game plan. We confused them for a period of time, which is a good thing. It's not good enough to play on one half of the field and not the other end."

Three different Hoyas scored and one tallied an assist on the offensive end of the field.

The Hoyas were outshot by the Terps, 29-19, and fell short on the draw with four to Maryland's 13. UMD held the 24-10 advantage on ground balls and GU forced 13 Terp turnovers while committing 16.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the loss in the cage despite a good day in net with nine saves in the contest.

The first 10 minutes of the game was scoreless as the Hoya defense slowed the high-powered Terrapin offense. Fisher came up with a number of huge saves including one in transition to keep the Terps off the board.

On offense, Georgetown slowed it down and was patient, looking for a good shot. As the minutes ticked away, Maryland began to force Hoya turnovers and eventually scored the first goal of the game at 16:52.

At 12:24 the offense cleared out the right side and allowed sophomore Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) to go to work going 1v1 with her defender and finding the back of the net to tie it at one.

The Terps quickly answered to regain the lead and spark a 4-0 run, but long Hoya possessions kept the game within reach.

Georgetown couldn't find the back of the net as the squad went into the break trailing 5-1.

Maryland struck first with a goal just three minutes in to take the lead to five and added another just 22 seconds later.

It was a 3-0 run to start the half for the Terps, but senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored the second goal of the game after she picked up her first shot and found the back of the cage to make it 8-2. The momentum was short lived, however, as Maryland came right back to score.

Midway through the second, junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) took a diving shot off of a pass from junior midfielder Kassandra Bowling (Monkton, Md./Bryn Mawr School) to get the goal and make it 10-3. Off of the ensuing draw control, the Terps scored to keep pulling away.

Maryland would add one more before the day was through as the Blue & Gray eventually fell, 12-3.

Georgetown will continue BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday as the squad travels to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the No. 8/9 Florida Gators. The opening draw is scheduled for noon. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
