WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team was unable to respond to an offensive outburst by the DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday morning and dropped the final game of the three-game series, 14-1, in a shortened five-inning affair. With the loss, the Hoyas are now 13-24 overall and 3-7 in BIG EAST play.
DePaul struck in the top of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) singled up the middle batting at the top of the lineup and proceeded to steal second, but Georgetown left Kane stranded to end the inning.
In the top of the second inning, DePaul extended the lead with a solo home run and two consecutive doubles which moved the score to 4-0 in the Blue Demons favor.
GU scored what would be its only run of the game in the bottom of the third when a double to left center field by Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), who reached base after she singled through the left side. The score read 4-1 through three innings of play.
The Blue Demons increased their lead to 8-1 in the top of the fourth, a lead that proved to be too much for the Blue & Gray to overcome.
A six-run fifth inning for DePaul made it 14-1 to end the game and seal the victory in favor of the Blue Demons.
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) and Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) all saw action in the circle for Georgetown in the loss.
In addition to Kane, Appelbe and Giovanniello, Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) also recorded a hit.
Georgetown returns to action this weekend when it travels to Indianapolis, Ind., for a BIG EAST series against the Butler Bulldogs. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
