WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (6-9, 5-1 BIG EAST) hung on to defeat the Marquette University Golden Eagles (4-12, 0-6 BIG EAST), 8-7, in its BIG EAST Conference road finale on Saturday in Wauwatosa, Wis. With the victory, the Hoyas clinched the second seed in the BIG EAST Tournament which begins Apr. 30 in Storrs, Conn.
"It was important to get the win today and it's good to be moving on," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "Clinching the second seed gets us one step closer to our team goals and now we can look ahead to senior day back home next weekend."
Leading the way for the Hoyas was junior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) with two goals and an assist. She was joined by junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) and senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who had two goals apiece as five players scored a point for the Blue & Gray.
Georgetown outshot MU, 25-14, and had 10 draw controls while allowing Marquette seven. Both squads forced 17 turnovers, and the Hoyas held the slight 14-13 advantage in ground balls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the win in the cage with seven saves in the contest.
The Hoyas opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest beginning a 4-0 run. Tarzian had an unassisted tally at 28:53, and a minute later Etchison scored her first of the game. Tarzian's second goal was off of a free position shot at 19:31, and freshman attacker Amada Ignacio (Cooksville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) rounded out the run with an unassisted goal at 15:43.
Marquette answered with back-to-back scores to cut the lead to two, but the Blue & Gray managed one more as senior attacker Sammy Giordano (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) connected on a free position shot at 7:52.
The Golden Eagles tallied one more in the first half to send the squads into the break with Georgetown leading, 5-3.
The Hoyas opened the second half much like the first with a 3-0 run. Etchison began the scoring with a free position goal at 26:54. Bandos then tallied back-to-back goals with Etchison assisting on the first and then knocking down the free position goal at 22:03 to make it 8-3.
The Golden Eagles didn't give up, however, as the squad came right back with a 4-0 run as the Hoyas became sloppy late in the contest.
Marquette cut the lead to one with 5:45 left to play, and pulled in the ensuing draw control. The Golden Eagles were awarded a free position shot, but Fisher came up with the save to give GU possession.
The Hoyas ran out the clock and came away with the 8-7 victory.
Georgetown will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts the Temple University Owls at Multi-Sport Field in a 3 p.m., matchup. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. It will also be Senior Day as the team honors the nine members of the senior class.
