April 21, 2015 Final Stats
WASHINGTON - Senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) got the start in the circle for the Blue & Gray and recorded 10 strikeouts for the third time this season, but it wasn't enough as the Hoyas dropped a Tuesday contest to George Washington (22-20, 4-11), 4-2, in Washington, D.C. GU is now 13-28 overall.
Scoring started early in the contest when Bradleigh Breland of GW sent a sac fly into right field that brought in Megan Linn and put the Colonials up 1-0 following one full inning of play.
The Hoyas were able to respond in the top of the fourth inning when an error by the third baseman allowed Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to cross home and tie the score at 1-1.
George Washington regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when it scored two runs to make it 3-1, with one out. Hyson came through for the Hoyas and ended the inning recording back-to-back strikeouts.
A walk with the bases loads in the bottom of the fifth inning increased the Colonials lead to 4-1.
Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) doubled in the top of the sixth inning and a double by Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) immediately after brought in Gargicevich-Almeida to close the gap as the scoreboard read 4-2. GU was unable to capitalize on Henry's double and left her stranded to end the inning.
Georgetown recorded at hit in the top of the seventh, but the Hoyas were unable to come back and the 4-2 score became final.
Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida led all Hoyas with two hits on the day. Appelbe, Henry and Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) each had one hit in the loss.
Up next for GU is a three-game set versus Providence at Guy Mason Field. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at noon, the day will also serve as senior day for three student-athletes.
