VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (3-9, 2-1 BIG EAST) downed the Villanova University Wildcats (7-5, 2-1 BIG EAST), 9-5, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on a rainy Wednesday evening at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa. The victory handed VU its first conference loss of the season and snapped a five-game home win streak for the `Cats.
"The biggest thing for us is building some confidence, we played fast, dominated in some areas. There are things we can improve on but I'd rather focus on what we did well," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "Draw controls were huge, clearing the ball was big, riding was big, so all the things that have been our trademarks showed up tonight. Those allow the other things to happen, and we'll build on that moving forward."
Senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the Hoyas with two goals and two assists, while junior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) had two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) managed two goals, and senior attacker Mollie Caputo (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) had one goal and two assists.
The Hoyas outshot the Wildcats, 31-18, and had the advantage on the draw with 11 to VU's six. Georgetown held the 29-19 advantage on ground balls and forced 17 Wildcat turnovers while committing just 13.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the win in the cage with seven saves in the contest.
The Hoyas won the opening draw and immediately went down and scored less than a minute into the contest. Freshman midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) passed it to a moving Caputo who made it 1-0. Minutes later, Tarzian connected on a free position attempt to put the Hoyas ahead by two.
Tarzian added one more at 22:02 curling on the right side and forcing a Villanova timeout.
It became a defensive battle for the next 12 minutes as both teams had possession and chances, but couldn't find the back of the cage. At 9:51, junior midfielder Natalie Miller (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) broke through to make it 4-0 as GU continued to build the lead.
The Wildcats hit a free position at 7:14 for their first goal of the contest, but Georgetown answered with under two minutes to go when Etchison found Bandos and made it 5-1 which would stand at the break.
The Wildcats opened the second half with a goal, but off of the ensuing draw control, Etchison came down and fired right back to make it 6-2. Etchison added one more as Tarzian passed it to her from behind the goal as GU took the five-goal lead.
After a Hoya goal was waved off due to an illegal stick, Villanova was awarded the draw and scored at 22:37 and then added another at 9:58 to cut the lead to three.
After a long scoreless drought, the Blue & Gray added to the lead as Bandos scored right down the middle from Caputo on the left side to make it 8-4 with 5:40 remaining in the contest. Caputo added another assist sending it to sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) in the middle of the crease.
Villanova added a goal in the final 40 seconds, but Georgetown held on leading wire to wire and taking the 9-5 victory.
Georgetown will return to Multi-Sport Field on Saturday for a noon matchup with Cincinnati. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
