WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite registering 12 penalty corners and eight shots, the Georgetown field hockey team (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) dropped its season opener against Davidson, 1-0, on Friday night at Multi-Sport Field.
"Unfortunately, sometimes you can outcorner or outshoot your opponent and still not come out with a win and that's what happened to us tonight," Georgetown Head Coach Shannon Soares said. "I thought we pressured Davidson pretty well in the first half. We turned them over a lot in their defensive end, we just couldn't execute the opportunities we were given. We have to give credit to Davidson for a high work rate and keeping us on our heels."
Georgetown controlled the tempo for majority of the first half as the Hoyas registered seven shots to Davidson's three. Leading the Blue and Gray's offense was senior Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Hathaway Brown) and junior Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Ann Arbor Pioneer) as they both registered three shots apiece. Adding depth to Georgetown's attack were senior Sarah Butterfield (Bridgewater, N.J. / Oak Knoll) and junior Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./ Wyoming Seminary), who posted a shot each.
However, at the 9:09 mark the Wildcats outpaced the Hoyas on a rebound, securing a goal and a 1-0 lead.
Going into the second period, Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) kept Davidson from furthering its success as she recorded two saves. Overall, the junior had four saves.
Battling for possession, both teams would remain scoreless in the second half, giving the win to Davidson.
The Hoyas will look to redeem themselves on Sunday, Aug. 30 as they host Rider at 12 p.m. at Multi-Sport Field.
