Sept. 11, 2015 Final Stats
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team moved to 3-2 after defeating Virginia Commonwealth University, 1-0 in overtime at Multi-Sport Field on Friday afternoon. The victory puts GU on a three-game winning streak for the first time since 2001, when the Hoyas went on an eight-game streak.
Defender Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./ Wyoming Seminary) provided the overtime heroics for the Blue & Gray 13 minutes into the extra period off a penalty stroke. It is the second penalty stroke that the junior has netted this season. Holmes now leads the Hoyas with two goals.
"First off, credit to VCU for giving us a challenging and tough physical match up," Georgetown Head Coach Shannon Soares said. "They were a team that wasn't to be taken lightly looking into this match and that's exactly what they were when we played them for 83 minutes and 36 seconds. With that being said, I am very proud of our group for their resilience and their willingness to battle the entire match. We talked about toughness prior to the start of this match and I think they took what we gave them and ran with it. They took the reins and this win is all them and has nothing to do with us as a staff. They gritted it out and they deserve it."
Defensively, Georgetown successfully stopped 14 VCU penalty corners while GU goalkeeper, Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land) secured eight saves in over 83 minutes. The junior currently averages a .900 save percentage.
Offensively, seven Hoyas registered shots. Forwards Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa. / Harrisburg Academy) and Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia High School) led the attack with two shots each.
"We will enjoy this win but for a very brief time as we quickly turn our attention to a very tough opponent in Lock Haven," Soares said.
Georgetown will look extend its success as it visits Lock Haven on Sept. 19 for its first road match of the season at 2 p.m. Live stats for the match up can be found at www.golhu.com.
