Sept. 20, 2015 Final Stats
BETHLEHEM - In its second game on the road, the Georgetown field hockey team bested Lehigh, 1-0 to earn its fourth win of the season Sunday afternoon. Improving to 4-3, Georgetown's victory against the Mountain Hawks is a first for the Hoyas since 2011.
"Overall, I'm proud of the way our team responded after what was certainly a disappointing loss yesterday," Georgetown Head Coach Shannon Soares said. "I thought we did a better job of staying disciplined in our outletting but still have some work to do in terms of being a more proactive and attacking team. We will spend the week hard at work preparing for a gritty Towson team on Friday."
After a strong defensive showing from both teams in the first 32 minutes, Georgetown struck the game's only goal when Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa. / Villa Maria) beat Lehigh's goalkeeper among a group of players and found the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal at the 32:52 mark. The freshman was assisted by sophomore Megan Parsons (Chester Springs, Pa. / Villa Maria) with her first assist on the year.
Taking a 1-0 lead, the Blue & Gray would hold Lehigh scoreless into the half.
The Mountain Hawks opened the second half with an attacking mindset and were awarded three penalty corners in a row. However, the Hoya defense held strong and did not let Lehigh capitalize.
Leading Georgetown's defense was goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Red Land), who registered a season best 14 saves against the Mountain Hawks. Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Ann Arbor Pioneer) added depth to GU's defense as she recorded a defensive save. Overall, the Hoyas successfully stopped 13 penalty corners.
Lehigh would keep pressure on Georgetown with 11 shots in the second half, but the Hoyas would hold on for the 1-0 win.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 25 when they visit Towson at 6 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
