Sept. 3, 2015 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey team looks to bounce back from a 0-2 start as the Hoyas welcome La Salle and Saint Francis to Multi-Sport Field this weekend. Georgetown will face the Explorers on Friday and the Red Flash on Sunday, with both games starting at 1 p.m.
"Last weekend was obviously disappointing for us with two 0-1 results and losing in the last 17 seconds against a tough Rider squad," head coach Shannon Soares said. "We've been hard at work this week preparing for our two matches against challenging opponents in LaSalle and St. Francis and are looking forward to the opportunity to host them both at home."
However, despite two losses the Hoyas have already shown improvement on the field, having increased their shots per game average from last season's 6.1 to 7.0. The Blue & Gray has also held their opponents to a .067 shot percentage compared to last year's .200.
Pacing the offense for the Hoyas are veterans Molly Thompson, Emily Weinberg and Sarah Butterfield, who all registered three shots in Georgetown's opening weekend. Defensively, Rachel Skonecki secured 15 saves on the weekend for GU.
La Salle enters the weekend, 1-1, having triumphed over Villanova, 2-1 after losing to Maine, 5-1. The Explorers are averaging a .150 shot percentage and 10 shots per game.
An experienced La Salle roster, featuring eight starters from last year's 11-7 team, is strengthened by a trio of freshman. Newcomer Mackenzie Karcher was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Co-Rookie of the Week, after her first collegiate goal clinched La Salle's win over Villanova in the 54th minute.
Saint Francis comes into the weekend riding a two-game losing streak, after falling to Ohio, 2-0 and William & Mary, 4-1.
Freshman Irene Fritschy scored the lone goal for the Red Flash as the Netherlands native made a quick turn-around shot from the top of the circle against William & Mary.
