Comeback Not Enough in 3-2 Loss at Villanova

Oct. 29, 2016

Final Stats

WASHINGTON - Despite holding a 24-14 advantage in shots and three points from sophomore Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia), the Georgetown field hockey team could not overcome three first-half goals by Villanova in dropping a 3-2 decision to the Wildcats in Conshohocken, Pa., Saturday in the BIG EAST finale for both teams.

The Hoyas (5-12, 0-7 BIG EAST) also held a 14-9 advantage in penalty corners which led to both of their goals.

Molly Turner scored just 4:06 into the contest to put Villanova in front early off the first of two assists from Kristen Mericle. She would find Courtney Devine with 10:30 left in the opening half to increase the lead before Emma McLaughlin scored the eventual game-winner with only 11 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats a 3-0 halftime lead.

Georgetown held a 15-9 edge in shots and a 10-4 margin in corners in the first half, but were held scoreless thanks to five saves by Erika Miller.

Five different Hoyas scored in the second half as they attempted a comeback, scoring two goals off corners just 5:44 apart on strikes by Masiello and sophomore Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa./Villa Maria), the team's second and third-leading goal scorers, respectively.

Hickey got the Hoyas on the board 17:51 remaining in the game with her fifth goal of the season off assists from Masiello and freshman Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy). With her first career assist, Getz now leads the team with 15 points this season.

Just under six minutes later, Masiello would pull Georgetown within one off assists from junior Megan Parsons (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria) and senior Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer). With assists on the play, Parsons and Thompson increased their team-lead to six this season.

However, that would be as close as the Hoyas would get as Miller made two saves on shots by Masiello off penalty corners in the final 4:39.

Miller finished the game with 10 saves for the Wildcats (5-13, 2-5 BIG EAST) while senior Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) made seven for Georgetown.

The Hoyas conclude their 2016 season with a nonconference contest at La Salle on Sunday beginning at noon. The game will mark the final games in the careers of Georgetown's six seniors: Thompson, Skonecki, Maria McDonald (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy), Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and Hailey Vann (Yorktown, Va./Tabb).

During their four seasons, the class of 2017 has won 21 games, the most by any senior class since 2005.
