WASHINGTON - The Georgetown field hockey team surrendered the game's only two goals in the first 15 minutes and could not find the back of the cage despite a furious second-half rally as the Hoyas dropped their season finale on the road to La Salle Sunday at Hank DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, 2-0.
Georgetown (5-13) outshot the Explorers, 9-4, in the second half, and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. The Hoyas earned back-to-back corners which led to three shots over the final 3:34, but two were saved by La Salle's Rachel Hartman and the other was wide.
Hartman totaled six of her 10 saves in the second half.
Summer Pierson scored the game-winning goal and her first goal of the season, just 3:59 into the game off a rebound before Jess Hoffman doubled the lead with a goal 10 minutes later off a centering pass from Abbey Lawrence.
Senior Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) finished with 11 saves, including 10 in the first half as the Explorers outshot Georgetown, 14-5. The game marked the 17th of her career with at least 10 saves.
For the season, Skonecki finished 10th in school history in saves (155), eighth in save percentage (.721), third in goals against average (3.36) and fourth in minutes played (1248:30).
Skonecki finished her career ranked fourth at Georgetown in saves (429), fifth in save percentage (.723), third in wins (19) and second in shutouts (9). She also made 54 starts in goal, the second-most by a goalie in school history behind Briana Pereira (60).
Skonecki is part of a six-member senior class that includes Maria McDonald (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh), Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy), Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and Hailey Vann (Yorktown, Va./Tabb).
In addition to posting 21 career wins, the most by a field hockey senior class since 2005, the seniors have totaled 375 games played with 311 starts. Off the field, they have combined for 17 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad selections.
"This senior class has done great things for our program and culture," said Head Coach Shannon Soares. "They've brought a sense of commitment, accountability, energy and love that will serve as the foundation of Georgetown field hockey for years to come. As a staff, we are grateful for all that they've given to this family throughout their time on the Hilltop."
Graves-Brown finished her career ranked 23rd in school history in points (39), 23rd in goals (14) and 13th in assists (11). She is also second in games played (73), just two off the school record held by Annie Wilson.
Holmes finished sixth in defensive saves (9), 14th in games played (69) and 10th in games started (63) while Thompson is ranked eighth in defensive saves (8), 17th in games played (67) and 19th in game started (51).
