Hoyas Open San Juan Shootout on Thursday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-2) will open play at the San Juan Shootout in Dayton Beach, Fla., at the Ocean Center on Thursday against Wright State at 11 a.m. The squad will play its second contest of the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m., against Penn State. The matchups mark GU's fourth and fifth away games of a seven-game road swing.

The Blue & Gray used a big second half to down the Florida International University Panthers, 66-53, in Miami, Fla., on Tuesday at FIU Arena. The teams were tied at halftime, but GU outscored the Panthers 42-29 in the second half to pick up the victory.

In her home state, senior guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds as well as four blocks. Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) was the other Hoya in double figures tallying 15 points and six steals. Junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/- [Chipola College]) tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven. She also scored eight points.

The Hoyas pulled down 45 boards and shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field, while the Panthers shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) from the field and managed 31 rebounds. The difference came as Georgetown forced 23 turnovers on 17 steals with 20 points off of turnovers.

Woodard is leading the team in scoring with 17.0 ppg and has posted 9.0 rpg as well as two double-doubles. White is second with 15.0 ppg as well as 5.0 rpg and a team high in steals with 18. Junior guard Dorothy Admomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) rounds out those in double figures with 14.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and a pair of double-doubles to her credit.

Georgetown holds a +11.0 rebounding margin over opponents and is shooting 37.2 percent on the season. The Hoyas are currently 1-2 on the road.

Wright State had four players score in double figures as they improved to 4-0 on the season with a 71-65 win at Chicago State Saturday afternoon. The Raiders matched the 2014-15 squad for the best four-game start for the program since moving up to Division I. The squad has three players averaging double figures with Chelsea Welch leading the way with 18.0 ppg.

This will be the first meeting between the squads.

Penn State (3-1) is coming off of a big victory as the squad earned a 70-56 victory over No. 13/13 Tennessee at the Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday. Sophomore Teniya Page recorded her second-straight 20-point game and eighth of her career, leading Penn State with 29 points on the evening.

The Hoyas are 1-5 all-time against the Lady Lions and have never met on a neutral court. The last meeting was a 77-68 Penn State victory at McDonough Arena during the 2013-14 season. The lone Georgetown victory came in 1993 when the Hoyas beat Penn State, 68-67, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The San Juan Shootout was originally scheduled to take place in Puerto Rico. However, concerns over Zika moved the event to Daytona Beach.
