Georgetown Splits on Opening Day

The Georgetown University softball bounced back to win its second game of the day and earned a split on the first day of the Charleston Southern Tournament on Friday. The Hoyas lost the first game, 3-1, to Towson, but came back to beat IPFW, 13-6, in the second game.

GAME ONE:Towson 3, Georgetown 1

Wasting no time at the plate, the Hoyas took a 1-0, lead within their first three batters. Theresa Kane (Mys
tic, Ct./Stonington) sparked the run with a single to the left side. Quick on her feet, the sophomore advanced to third off a ground ball to first by Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep). Batting third, senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) brought in the run with a double to left field.

The Blue & Gray maintained a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third, when back-to-back doubles from Towson tied the game at one.

The scoreboard remained at1-1 through the next three innings as both teams combined for only four hits.

Towson was able to break the tie and keep the game from extra innings with a homerun in the bottom of the seventh to bring in two runs.

In the circle, the Hoyas were led by Avery Geehr (
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra). She faced 31 batters in six innings pitched.

GAME TWO: Georgetown 13 - IPFW 6

Georgetown was able to keep the Mastodons quiet through four innings, holding IPFW to four hits and zero runs. GU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Giovanniello homered to center field for a 2-0 lead.

IPFW responded with two hits in the top of the fifth. Three GU errors allowed the Mastodons to capitalize on the hits for four runs, giving IPFW a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Georgetown fired back with four runs of its own. With two outs a triple to right field from Kane, a double to left field from Belknap and a single from Sarah Bennett returned the lead to the Hoyas at 6-4.

In the sixth inning, IPFW scored two more runs but the inning belonged to GU, who exploded for seven runs. The Hoyas's momentum was highlighted by a home run from Bennett that brought in three runs.

Going only half an inning more, the game would end in a 13-6 Georgetown victory.

Leading the Hoyas on the mound for seven innings was Giovanniello, who dealt nine strikeouts for 37 batters faced.

The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. against Towson and tournament host, Charleston Southern at 3 p.m.
