Feb. 12, 2016

Box Score

WASHINGTON -

The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (0-1) led early, but it wasn't enough to keep the Hoyas from falling,10-6, to the University of Delaware (1-0) in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field.

Senior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School ) led the way with two goals and two assists while attacker Morgan Rubin (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School ) added two goals and midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) chipped in two assists. Six different players tallied a point for the Hoyas in the loss. Overall, Georgetown outshot the Blue Hens, 28-23 and pulled in 11 draw controls to Delaware's seven.

Junior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the loss in the cage with three saves, senior keeper Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added three more saves in the second half.

Just two minutes into the game, Rubin notched the first goal of the game off an assist from Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh). Maintaining GU's momentum, Hannah Seibel rattled off a second goal to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game.

Delaware answered with a 2-0 run of its own with goals at 24:25 and 21:56, but Georgetown added one more score on a counter as Etchison passed it to Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur). The goal from GU's 2015 leading scorer moved the advantage back to one, 3-2, at 18:38.

The Blue Hens chipped in their third goal at 15:13. Less than three minutes later, Rubin scored her second of the evening to make the score 4-3.

Delaware regained momentum with back-to-back goals over the next nine minutes as the Blue Hens claimed two of the last three draw controls of the half. Georgetown would gain the last possession before the half but a Hoya turnover gave Delaware the 5-4 advantage going into the break.

Coming out of the break, Delaware would extend its lead with a 2-0 run in the first three minutes of the second half. Keeping on Delaware's heels, Etchison responded with a goal to cut the Blue Hens' lead back to 7-5.

It continued to be a back-and-forth game as Delaware made it 8-5, but Georgetown pushed to cut the lead to 8-6 with a second goal from Etchison, assisted by Whitehurst at 26:13.

Unfortunately, a ground ball put back by the Blue Hens got through the Hoya defense to give Delaware the three-goal lead with time winding down. A second ground ball down kept the ball in Delaware's possession as the Blue Hens slowed it down to burn the clock.

The Georgetown defense fought back to force three Delaware turnovers in the last nine minutes of the game. Despite keeping the Blue Hens scoreless for the remainder of the game, the Hoyas were unable to capitalize, giving the game to Delaware, 10-6.

The Hoyas will visit defending national champion, Maryland, next weekend at College Park. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
