Feb. 18, 2016 WASHINGTON -
The Georgetown University softball team (1-2) heads down to Jacksonville, Fla. for the 2016 Dolphin Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville University. The Hoyas are set to face Penn State on Friday, Feb, 19 at 9 a.m. followed by Pittsburgh at 11:30 a.m. On Saturday, the Blue & Gray match up against Pittsburgh at 9 a.m. and Radford at 2 p.m. GU will close the invitational with a single game against Jacksonville on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
Last weekend, the Hoyas went 1-2 at the Charleston Southern Tournament, having their final game of the weekend against the host canceled due to dusk. Georgetown knocked off IPFW 13-6 but dropped two contests to Towson (3-1, 11-4).
Three games into the season, sophomore Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) leads the Hoyas with seven hits and a .583 batting average. Senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) holds a team-best seven runs batted in and two home runs. Freshman Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) has also added depth to GU's lineup with five hits and a .667 slugging percentage.
Sophomore Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra), junior Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) and Giovanniello started on the rubber for Georgetown's three games from the Charleston Southern Tournament. Standing at 1-0, Giovanniello leads the staff with a 2.00 ERA across seven innings with nine strikeouts.
Scouting Penn State
The Nittany Lions continue a three-week stint in the Sunshine State with the Dolphin Invitational. The Nittany Lions went 1-4 in the Kick-Off Classic in Boca Raton to start the season and will see action in the Citrus Classic in Orlando to close out the month. Shelby Miller is batting .500 with nine hits including a double and a triple, and five RBIs.
Penn State Series
The Nittany Lions come into the matchup with a 1-0 advantage over the Hoyas. The teams last met in 2011.
Scouting Pittsburgh
The Panthers enter the weekend as the only team with a winning record. At 4-1 overall, Pittsburgh is coming off a 4-3 loss to Central Michigan. Kayla Harris has pitched 19 innings, allowing 14 hits and five runs for a 2.37 ERA. Erin Hershman, Maggie Sevilla and Shelby Pickett combine for 20 of the Panthers' 44 hits.
Pittsburgh Series
The Panthers hold a 5-1 all-time record against the Hoyas. GU's only win of the series came in a 2-1 victory in 2010.
Scouting Radford
The Dolphin Invitational will serve as Radford's season opener. A year ago, the Highlanders went 12-37. The team will be making its 2016 debut under the direction of newly-hired head coach Aileen Morales.
Radford Series
The Highlanders hold a 6-0 advantage over the Hoyas since their last meeting in 2011.
Scouting Jacksonville
Jacksonville faced No. 1 Florida Wednesday in a doubleheader, dropping both games by scores of 6-0 and 10-0.The Gators tabbed a no hitter in game one before surrendering their lone hit of the day to Kristen Griffith in the finale. Overall, Griffith, Danielle Baker and Ciara Jones guide the Dolphins with five hits each.
Jacksonville Series
This weekend with be the first matchup between the Hoyas and the Dolphins since 2008 in the Georgia Southern Invitational. Overall, Jacksonville leads the all-time series 1-0.
