WASHINGTON -
Despite outscoring defending national champion Maryland in the second half, the Georgetown University women's lacrosse team dropped its second game of the season, 16-8, against the Terps on Saturday afternoon.
Six different Hoyas scored and four tallied assists on the offensive end of the field.
GU was outshot by the Terps, 34-17, and fell short on the draw with eight to Maryland's 20. UMD held the 19-13 advantage on ground balls and Georgetown forced six Terp turnovers while committing nine.
Junior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher and senior Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) shared time in the cage for the Hoyas, combining for nine saves. Fisher took the loss in the cage to move 0-2 on the season.
Maryland controlled the first of half of the game, securing 14 goals. However, Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) broke through the Terp defense to put up two goals for the Hoyas heading into the half.
Staying hot, Bandos opened the second half with her third goal of the game off an assist from Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School).
The Terps responded with two more goals, but Hoyas would keep control of the half recording five more goals. Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) sparked the GU run at 16:15 followed by Morgan Rubin (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School/North Carolina), Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School), Kristen Ierna (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Etchison with a goal apiece.
Overall GU would outscore the Terps, 6- 4, in the final half but it would not be enough to push past Maryland, resulting in an 18-8 Hoya loss.
Georgetown will stay on the road, visiting Princeton on Feb. 27 for its third matchup of the season.
