WASHINGTON -
The Georgetown University softball team was three outs away from a victory in the opening game of the Carolina Classic against IUPUI (4-6) on Friday, only to find itself in an extra inning affair before falling short, 7-6, against the Jags.
Georgetown (1-8) got solid pitching from senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), who went all 10 innings, only giving up six walks in 47 batters faced while dishing out a pair of strikeouts.
Giovanniello and sophomore Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led the Hoya offense with two runs apiece while freshman Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) topped the team with three hits.
Bennett also secured 13 put outs at first.
Georgetown opened the game with a strong defensive stop, as the Hoyas retired IUPUI's third, fourth and fifth batters. Building off its defensive momentum, GU registered three runs in the bottom of the first.
With Kane on second, Giovaniello hit a single through the right side. Quick on their feet, Giovanniello made her way to third while Kane made it home off an IUPUI throwing error.
Keeping the Hoyas momentum alive, Bennett drove a deep shot to the center field wall to score Giovaniello and two batters later Grace Appelbe's (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) single to center gave Georgetown a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second the Jags loaded the bases with two outs but solid Hoya defense kept the Jags scoreless.
IUPUI registered its first run in the top of the third off of two hits, but the Hoyas added two insurance runs on sacrifice flies in the bottom of the sixth.
With Georgetown leading 5-1 in the top of the seventh, the victory seemed secure for the Hoyas, but a four-run rally from IUPUI sent the Blue & Gray into extra innings for the first time this season.
Using the international tie breaker each team started their inning with a runner on second.
Each team threated with hits but neither team was able to follow through with any runs.
Heading into the 10th inning, IUPUI finally broke the silence with a shot from Ali Mosier right up the middle to drive in two runs giving the Jags its first lead of the game at 7-5.
The Hoyas needed two runs to continue the game and after a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly, Georgetown got one run back, but a GU ground out would end the game and give the Jags the 7-6 win.
Georgetown will be back in action with two games Saturday. The Hoyas take on Fairfield at 10 a.m. while a second game with IUPUI starts at 1 p.m.
