Box Score Feb. 27, 2016

Final Stats

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Georgetown University softball team (2-9) split two games at the Carolina Classic hosted by University of North Carolina on Saturday, defeating Fairfield (0-2), 8-2, before falling to IUPUI (5-6), 12-7.

Freshman catcher Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) combined to go 3-for-8, driving in four runs, while sophomore left fielder Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) went 3-for-7 at the plate, scoring four runs on the day.

GAME ONE: Hoyas Drop Fairfield, 7-2 Senior pitcher Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) held the Stags to two runs, one earned, on three hits in a complete game effort, while the offense used a four-run fifth inning to seal the Georgetown's 8-2 win on Saturday morning.

Georgetown's offensive power was on full display, as freshman right fielder Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), Bennett and junior first baseman Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) each homered. Giovanniello helped her own cause going 2-for-4, while driving in two runs in the victory.

The Stags struck first, as Tori Reed's one-out double to right field scored Lauren Filicia, to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Amen answered for the Hoyas in the bottom of the third inning, hitting a two-run home run, to take a 2-1 advantage. Bennett tacked on a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Hoyas offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Gargicevich-Almeida hit a lead-off homer. Later in the inning, Giovanniello singled through the left side to drive in a run, before a pair of unearned runs scored on fielder's choice plays to give GU a 7-1 lead.

Fairfield answered with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, but it would be too little, too late. Giovanniello drove in one more run with a double to right center in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal GU's 8-2 victory.

GAME TWO: Hoyas Fall to IUPUI, 12-7 The Hoyas erased a four-run deficit in the top of the third inning, keyed by Bennett's two-run double, but IUPUI scored eight runs between the fourth and fifth innings to drop Georgetown, 12-7.

The Jaguars jumped on GU in the bottom of the first inning, as Roni Patterson hit a three-run home run, followed one out later by Maggie Good's solo shot, taking a quick 4-0 lead.

Georgetown struck back with a two-out rally in the top of the third inning. With two on base, freshman Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) singled up the middle to drive in GU's first run. The Hoyas closed within two runs, when Kane scored on a wild pitch, before Bennett's double to right center drove in two more, tying the score at four runs apiece.

A pair of GU errors kept the bottom of the fourth inning alive for IUPUI, as they plated four unearned runs to take an 8-4 lead.

Senior shortstop Grace Applebe's (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) three-run home run in the top of the fifth brought Georgetown back within one run, but were unable to do anymore damage, stranding the bases loaded.

The Jaguars brought nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to put the game out of reach.

Junior Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits, through 5.0 innings. Giovanniello started the game, allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits through 1.0 inning.

Georgetown concludes the Carolina Classic when they take on the host Tar Heels on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
