WASHINGTON -
Despite holding a three-inning lead over No. 23 Nebraska, the Georgetown University softball team (5-16) lost to the Huskers, 12-4, on Sunday afternoon in the Hoyas' final game at the Louisville Slugger Invitational. Georgetown had five batters register hits in its fourth consecutive game against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Georgetown jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) and a two-out Husker error.
Limiting Nebraska to only one hit in the first two innings, the Hoyas extended their lead with an RBI double from Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) down the right line. The Huskers responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but Georgetown held on to a 3-2 advantage.
Heading into the bottom of the fourth, six walks allowed the Huskers to drive in four runs, giving Nebraska its first advantage of the game.
Trailing by three, Georgetown used a pair of Husker errors to get a run back in the top of the fifth. With two runners on base, Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) launched a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Georgetown's fourth run of the game. The Blue & Gray would put one more runner on base but would not be able to capitalize on the gain before the end of the inning.
Nebraska led off the bottom of the frame with a home run from Cassie McClure. Sustaining their momentum, the Huskers would put up five more runs, including a two-run homer for a 12-4 run-rule victory.
In the circle, Giovanniello (4-10) took the loss for Georgetown. She walked nine but surrendered only three hits and did not allow an earned run in 3.2 innings.
The Blue & Gray return to the east coast with an appearance in George Mason's Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, Va., March 18-20.
