WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped its first game in the Cherry Classic to Canisius, 4-1, on Friday afternoon in Fairfax, Va.
Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) took to the circle for the Hoyas, fanning five over 31 batters faced. The senior is 4-11 on the season for the Blue & Gray.
Both the Hoyas and the Golden Griffins opened the game with a solid field as both teams combined for zero hits or runs in the first inning.
Landing the first hit of the game, junior Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) was able to break through the Canisius defense in the bottom of the second when her single drove in Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr), who previously reached base on a walk.
With the Hoyas leading 1-0, the Golden Griffins responded with three runs off of three hits in the top of the third.
Playing errorless, Georgetown limited Canisius to only four hits and one run for the remainder of the game.
Overall, GU registered five hits in the game but was not able to ignite the momentum it needed to push past Canisius. Giovanniello led the Hoyas with two hits in the game, while freshman Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern), senior Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Gargicevich-Almeida each recorded a hit.
GU returns to action tomorrow morning when it takes the field against Cornell at 10 a.m. before facing Canisus in a rematch at 12:15 p.m. ET.
