Final Stats

WASHINGTON -

The Georgetown University softball team (3-11) bounced back to win its second game of the day and earned a split on the first day of the District Invite on Friday afternoon. The Hoyas defeated Big Ten opponent Maryland, 5-4,for the first time in program history after falling to Monmouth, 10-0.

Senior Samantha Giovaniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) combined to go 3-for-3, driving in two runs, including a home run against the Terps. Junior Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) followed with two hits, scoring one run.

In the Hoyas' first game, a strong pitching performance by Monmouth's Amanda Riley limited GU to only two hits. The Hawks scored 10 runs between the first and third innings to drop Georgetown, 10-0 in five innings.

Unyielding, the Hoyas were determined for success against the Terrapins. A regrouped Georgetown defense kept Maryland from capitalizing on 10 hits, limiting the Terps to only four runs in a complete game effort, while the GU offense used a three-run first inning to ignite the 5-4 Hoya win on Friday afternoon.

Georgetown's offensive strength was felt with Giovanniello's fifth home run of the season and a double from Elvina. Giovanniello went 2-for-2, while driving in two runs in the victory.

The Hoyas struck first after taking the Terps down in order in the top of the first inning. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led GU with a walk while advancing to second on a passed ball. Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Giovanniello also walked their way on to base. With bases loaded, a second passed ball gave Kane just enough time to find home plate. Belknap followed in off an error by Maryland's catcher Kristina Dillard. Elvina cushioned the Hoyas lead with a double to run in Giovanniello from third, giving the Blue & Gray a 3-0 lead heading into the second inning.

The Terps responded with runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but a home run from Giovanniello over the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth extended Georgetown's lead with two insurance runs.

With Georgetown leading, 5-2, Kane kept Maryland scoreless in the sixth inning as she secured three-consecutive fly balls in left field.

Maryland threatened one last time in the top of the seventh with two runs. However, the GU defense would contain the Terps and take the victory, 5-4.

Guiding the Hoyas on the mound, Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) captured her first win of the season, allowing only four runs on 10 hits through 7.0 innings. The junior tossed out two strikeouts and only gave up three walks in 34 batters faced.

Georgetown looks to extend its success when it takes on Robert Morris at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Nationals Youth Academy.
