WASHINGTON -
ÂÂÂÂThe Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (0-4) fell just short Saturday afternoon, 8-7, in the team's fourth game of the season against the Towson Tigers (5-0) at Johnny Unitas Stadium. After a back-and-forth bathe, the Hoyas couldn't find the answer in the closing minutes.
Attacker Morgan Rubin (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) led the way with two goals each, while midfielders Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) and Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) and attacker Kate Snouffer (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) each registered a goal. Attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) topped the Hoyas with two assists.
The Blue & Gray claimed 10 draw controls to Towson's seven and forced nine Tiger turnovers, but was outshot by Towson 19 to 13. Senior Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and junior Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) split time in the cage, with each playing one half, but McDonald took the loss in the cage with two saves to her credit.
Georgetown opened the scoring in the first minute as Rubin netted a free position shot at 29:10. Bandos wasted no time extending GU's lead with an assisted shot from Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) at 28:27. It was the first time this season that the Tigers found themselves trailing in the first half. However, the lead was short lived as the Tigers found the back of the cage off a Hoya turnover. Controlling the pace of the game, Towson hit a free position shot and unassisted goal at 22:49 and 21:27, respectively.
Georgetown and Towson exchanged goals in the next two minutes, tying the game 3-3.
Winning the ensuing draw control, Georgetown scored three of the next four goals in the game and took a 5-3 advantage with 16:58 to go in the stanza. Bandos and Rubin each scored their second goal of the game during that stretch while Etchison had a pair of assists.
The Hoyas maintained their lead by limiting Towson to a single goal in the following 10 minutes but two consecutive GU turnovers allowed the Tigers to tie the game at 5-5 with 6:20 showing on the clock.
Neither team would find the back of the net in the final six minutes, sending the two squads into the half tied at 5-5.
Towson opened the second half with a goal to once again take the lead , but back-to-back goals form Snouffer and Seibel gave the Hoyas a 7-6 lead with 18:02 to go in the game. The Tigers responded with a goal switch. The Tigers won the ensuing draw and once again tied the game at 7-7 with 17:24 to play.
Both teams had their chances over the next several minutes. However, a Hoya turnover at 3:38 gave the Tigers control of the game's pace. Trying to force a Towson turnover, Georgetown fouled giving Towson's Carly Tellekamp a free position shot, which she netted with 24 seconds to play.
Bandos would win the ensuing draw control for the Hoyas, but the Blue & Gray wouldn't find the equalizer, eventually falling, 8-7.
The Hoyas will be back in action against No. 14 Duke in Durham, N.C. on March 9 at 3 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
