Smith-Rivera Named All-BIG EAST Second Team; Govan Named All-Freshman

March 6, 2016

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior men's basketball player D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Oak Hill) was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, announced on Sunday afternoon.

Smith-Rivera was one of two Hoyas to earn all-league honors as he was joined by freshman center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy), who was named to the All-Freshman team.

This is the fourth-straight year Smith-Rivera has been recognized by the BIG EAST, as he was a first team selection in 2014-15, a second team selection in 2013-14 and an All-Rookie honoree in 2012-13.

Smith-Rivera ranks fifth all-time in scoring at Georgetown with 1,891 points, a 14.8 per game average in 128 career games. His 18 points against Xavier on Feb. 20 moved him past Othella Harrington ('96) for fifth place all-time. He needs 111 points to move past Alonzo Mourning ('92) for fourth all-time.

DSR ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring with 16.3 points per game, sixth in assists (4.6 apg), eighth in free throw percentage (81.4%), fifth in steals (1.5 spg), sixth in 3-point field goals made (2.2/game), fifth in assist/turnover ratio (2.2 ââ'¬" 144 assists, 66 turnovers) and leads the league in minutes played (35.7 mpg). He is the only BIG EAST player who ranks among the top 10 in seven different statistical categories.

In BIG EAST Conference games, Smith-Rivera finished fourth in the league with 17.4 points and fourth in assists, averaging 5.2 per game. He has scored 1,113 points in 71 career league games (15.8 ppg) and is the first Georgetown player to ever eclipse the 1,000-point mark in BIG EAST games.

He scored seven points in a loss to Villanova on Saturday to close out the regular season and moved into a tie for No. 22 on the all-time BIG EAST scoring list with 1,113 points.

Govan started the final six games of the regular season after senior center Bradley Hayes (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) broke his left hand prior to the Providence game on Feb. 13. Since moving into the starting lineup, he is averaging 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds. Overall this season, he is fifth on the team with 7.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Under Thompson III, the Hoyas have had 29 All-BIG EAST selections, including nine first team selections, six second team honorees, four third team nods, two honorable mentions and eight All-Rookie recognitions.

Smith-Rivera being named to the All-BIG EAST second team gives Georgetown 19 all-time selections to that squad. Since the BIG EAST was formed in 1979-80, Georgetown players have earned 88 all-conference honors.

He is the fourth player at Georgetown to earn All-BIG EAST honors in four-straight years, joining Patrick Ewing, Michael Jackson and Alonzo Mourning.
