April 20, 2016 WASHINGTON -
The Georgetown field hockey team recently held its end of the year banquet, the second with Head Coach Shannon Soares at the helm of the program at Clyde's in downtown Washington, D.C. The team, along with the parents in attendance, was able to reflect on the 2015 season accomplishments. Soares and staff also recognized student-athletes for their work off the field as well.
The 2015 season saw the Hoyas pick up eight wins, the most since 2002 when GU had nine wins on the season. The Blue & Gray also made improvements in several statistical categories including: goals scored (27), goals against (49), shutouts earned (4), goal differential (22). Georgetown's improvements were acknowledged by five BIG EAST regular season recognitions and the program's first ALL- BIG EAST First Team honor.
In addition to recognizing the student-athletes for their season, Soares also honored four seniors: Louise Chakejian (Chester Springs, Pa./The Episcopal Academy), Taylor Craig (New Canaan, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall), Callie Hiner (Westport, Conn./Staples) and Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and presented awards for Rookie of the Year; Most Improved; 1/ 2/ 3 MVP and Family-First Award.
The 2015 Rookie of the Year Award was presented to defender Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph's Academy), as she made significant contributions to the Georgetown program both on and off of the field over the course of her freshman campaign. On the field, Maransky made 19 starts this season, registering an assist against Saint Joseph's.
The 2015 Most Improved honor went to midfielder Joanna Hawkins (Emmaus, Pa/Emmaus) for her remarkable growth over the 2015 season, while impacting the program in a positive way. Her belief in the process and commitment to developing their craft allowed Georgetown Field Hockey to make considerable strides over the last season. Hawkins saw action in all 19 games this season with 19 starts.
The 1/2/3 MVP award was presented to midfielder Emily Weinberg. The honor is presented to the student-athlete who receives the most cumulative votes from their peers postgame in a 1/2/3 format. One vote is given to the third-most valuable player, two votes to the second-most valuable player, and three votes to the most-valuable player. The senior tallied four points for the Hoyas on one goal and two assists.
Midfielder Louise Chakejian rounded out the awards with her acceptance of the Family-First Award for her consistent effort to put the team first in all aspects. She inspired others with her actions, gained respected with her compassion, all the while, bringing everyone closer together.
