WASHINGTON - Despite outhitting Butler University, 11-9, the Georgetown University baseball team dropped the series finale to the Bulldogs, 12-6, on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Park in Indianapolis. With the loss, GU fell to 19-22 on the season and 4-5 in the BIG EAST, while Butler improved to 12-28 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) led the offense with three hits, finishing a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had two hits and scored two runs, while Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) also had two hits and Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) had two RBI.
Butler got on the board right away with three runs in the bottom of the first off of Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus).
DeRenzi got a run back for the Hoyas in the top of the second with a solo home run, his third of the season, to right field.
After the Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the second, Weisenberg again cut the deficit to two, 4-2, with a solo home run to left leading off the top of the third. It was also his third home run of the season.
The score remained the same until Butler pulled away with four runs off of Kevin Superko (Wellesely, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) in the bottom of the fifth to put GU in an 8-2 hole.
An infield single from Dillon in the top of the seventh scored Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS), who had walked, from third to cut the deficit to 8-3.
However, the Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to open a 12-3 lead.
In the ninth, Bialkowski and DeRenzi opened the inning with consecutive singles. One out later, Bialkowski scored on a double from Weisenberg and DeREnzi scored on a ground out by Dillon before a single from Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) drove in Weisenberg to provide the final score, 12-6.
The Hoyas will return home to Shirley Povich Field on Tuesday when they host the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES). The two teams will play a doubleheader, as their game on April 13 at UMES was postponed. Game one will be a seven-inning contest, beginning at 4 p.m., and game two will be a nine-inning affair immediately following the conclusion of game one.
