April 29, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (6-9, 4-2 BIG EAST) will travel to Temple University (11-5, 3-3 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. BIG EAST Conference matchup. The contest is GU's final game of the regular season. Saturday's results will determine BIG EAST Championship seedings.
On Tuesday, midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week and midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Bandos repeated as BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week after stuffing the stat sheet with five points, three goals, two assists, five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. The Hoyas were edged by UConn, 9-8, on Wednesday despite Bandos' two goals and four draw controls. She started GU's rally midway through the second half, with Georgetown taking the advantage with six minutes to play before UConn scored the game winner with 17 ticks left. In a crucial win over Marquette on Saturday, Bandos scored the game-tying goal with 10 minutes remaining before the Hoyas scored the go-ahead goal with under five minutes to play.
Whitehurst helped keep the Hoyas in playoff contention with eight points off five goals and three assists, along with five draw controls in a 1-1 week. Her back-to-back goals to open the second half against Marquette gave Georgetown a three-goal advantage, the most either team led by throughout the contest.
Whitehurst leads Georgetown in scoring with 33 points on 22 goals and team-best 11 assists. Bandos is second with a squad-best 26 goals and six assists. Senior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) rounds out the top three tallying 20 goals and a team-high 11 assists for 31 points. Bandos leads the squad with 37 draw controls, while senior defender Kassandra Bowling (Monkton, Md./Bryn Mawr School) has tallied a team-leading 16 caused turnovers.
Junior Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and senior Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) have shared the time in goal with 15 appearances each this season. Starting for the Hoyas, Fisher has recorded 47 saves, while McDonald has secured 58 stops.
Temple managed back-to-back wins last week to remain in the running for the BIG EAST Championship. Senior Brenda McDermott was been named the BIG EAST Lacrosse Attacker of the Week for her efforts in the game. McDermott posted a league-high 11 points off six goals and five assists in victories over Villanova and Cincinnati. She scored a hat trick in each outing while adding a pair of assists against the Wildcats and a trio of dishes against the Bearcats. The hat tricks were the third and fourth of the season for McDermott. The senior also recorded six ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
Georgetown is 3-4 all-time against the Owls and has won the past two meetings. Last year, GU managed the 13-12 victory on the Hilltop. The last meeting in Philadelphia, was an 8-5 Hoya loss during the 1997 season.
